Give 10 Rizal’s famous quotations (quotes) and explain each.

1. “He who does not know how to look back where he came from will never get to his destination.”

Explanation: It means that we should still look at all the experiences that we had before we
achieve our goals. We should also learn how to look back where we came from and be thankful to
all of it.

2. “There are no tyrants if there are no slaves.”

Explanation: If there’s no one willing to be stepped on, no one will abuse their power.

3. “Our liberty will not be secured at the sword's point... We must secure it by making ourselves worthy
of it. And when the people reach that height, God will provide a weapon, the idols will be shattered,
tyranny will crumble like a house of cards, and liberty will shine out like the first dawn.”

Explanation: We don’t have to fight for our freedom violently. We need to be upright so we can be
worthy of the liberty and freedom that God will give. If we do, everything will fall into places.

4. “It is not the criminals who arouse the hatred of others, but the men who are honest.”

Explanation: Being a criminal doesn’t mean you can open someone’s eyes. Honest people can.
They can let you realize what was really happening around you.

5. “I die without seeing dawn's light shining on my country ... You, who will see it, welcome it for me …
don't forget those who fell during the nighttime.”

Explanation: Jose Rizal wanted to say that he won’t be able to witness the freedom that he has
been fighting for in the Philippines. So to those who were able to witness it, he is saying that we
should welcome it wholeheartedly but don’t forget those who fought for it and those who died
fighting for it.

6. “The people do not complain because they have no voice; do not move because they are lethargic, and
you say that they do not suffer because you have not seen their hearts bleed.”

Explanation: This quote is from Noli Me Tangere, it means that people are not complaining
because no one will listen and those people will never see how much they are suffering.

7. “Tomorrow at 7, I shall be shot; but I am innocent of the crime of rebellion. I am going to die with a
tranquil conscience.”

Explanation: Rizal never rebels but what he did is to open the eyes and minds of the Filipino people
that we have been slave of other country for too long. It only means that he was innocent from all
the accusations that he received.
8. “The example could encourage others who only fear to start.”

Explanation: This line means that if no one will do it first, then those who are afraid will never do
something.

9. “Each one writes history according to his convenience.”

Explanation: It means that history can also be biased. Those who are in power will make
themselves good and their enemies bad.

10. “I can concede that the government has no knowledge of the people, but I believe the people know
less of the government. There are useless officials, evil, if you like, but there are also good ones, and
these are not able to accomplish anything because they encounter an inert mass, the population that
takes little part in matters that concern them.”

Explanation: Jose Rizal wanted to say government knows who are suffering and who are in need. It
is the people who do not know what is happening in the government, since they were not allowed
to be educated especially during Spanish era. He wanted to say that there are a lot of bad
politicians that even if there are some good and honest one, they are already overpowered by
those who are evil and corrupt.
