AMBON NG KRISTAL
Summary:
"Ambon ng Kristal" is a play by Elmer Gatchalian, about the teenager
named Gabby and her own struggles in life. Each of us has a different point
of view about what life is, and in her case, she is in need of someone who will
accept her with her flaws, understand her with her personality, and someone
who would stay by her side through the good and bad times. In the
beginning of the play, she reminisce the best memories she had during her
childhood; how her parents loved her unconditionally and shared to her all
the happiness in the world. Unfortunately, her dad chose to work abroad
because of bigger opportunities and with the idea to give his family a better
life. With this situation, she felt disconnected and she wasn't given much
attention anymore, as well as the increasing pressure because of her parents
expecting a lot from her. One day, she received harsh and negative
comments from her parents because they got a news that she's not doing
great in school. Her mother blamed her friends as well as her study habits
which led to making her feel alone and unimportant. She's looking for some
considerations coming from her parents and longing for the warm hugs and
sweet kisses that she was so used to before. One starry night, she got the
chance to be with her friends who also have issues in life. They enjoyed the
company of each other for they think they are in the same battlefield that's
why they were able to express their deepest feelings with the sense of
understanding and acceptance. And because of these problems, she resorted
to drugs together with her so-called "friends", they intake marijuana,
cocaine, shabu and other drugs just to ease the pain in exchange for a one
night happiness. When Gabby was alone again, Allen, who is dear to her
came to visit her. She tried to convince Allen to try to use different drugs
with strong effects she was using as well. Allen hesitated at first but when
Gabby said that if he really loves her, he would join them. Allen tried to
follow her request and even finish it all up yet the drug's effect on him made
him scared that's why he immediately stopped. This has caused Gabby to go
the wrong path, resulting in damaging her life and her relationships with the
people who truly cared and loved her. The story ended with her, having a lot
of realizations and that everyone left her, where her voice don't matter to
anyone anymore, and those happy memories with her loved ones are now a

distant memory in the past as she regrets that it was all her fault. It all ended
where her family and Allen gave her the comfort, assurance and love she's
been longing for. From that moment, she's willing to change, forget the past,
erase all the hatred and start anew.

Critical Analysis based on Sociology and Social Deviance:

The visibility of different status set together with particular role of each
character is very evident in the Ambon ng Kristal play together with the
social groups they belong in. The main character Gabby shows the
relationship between the family, which is the primary group; and friends,
which is the social group. There are a lot of social processes that exist in the
story because the play is a serious one, not comical. There is a conflict
between Gabby and her parents. There is also an existing cooperation
between Gabby and her friends. Accommodation also existed when Allen
tried the drugs for him to satisfy Gabby.
Social deviance refers to the violated social norms which means these
are all about something that happen rarely but creates a very huge impact to
the society in different ways that can influence other people. Gabby uses
drugs because she got affected by her environment that pushes her to be
like other people because an innocent person can easily give in on what
other people say such as it can relieve stress and solve problems.
The rebellion of her also shows a violated norm because she doesnt
get the attention of a normal child of the society. She is craving of her
fathers care because he went abroad for his band that makes Gabby feel
depressed. It causes also the low grades of Gabby due to lack of focus in
school because of other problems outside.
This play show a lot of social deviance that one person must be aware
of so he/she will able to recognize what must be done or what must be
stopped from doing. Ambon ng Kristal is a reminder that everyone should
know what to do first before anything else and the prohibition of the illegal or
bad habits should be implemented accordingly and effectively.
