You may have learned about the first man on the moon in your history lessons at school. Neil
Armstrong must have felt amazing when he walked on the moon and took photos of it for the
first time in 1969. So how did the USA get him there?
People usually talk about the technology that allowed the Americans to build the Apollo 11
spaceship, but what about the computers that were inside it? Before the 1960s, computers
were very large. If you visit the Science Museum in London, you can see the Pegasus
Computer, the world’s oldest digital computer. Built in the 1950s, it was the size of a lorry.
It was powerful, but scientists must have known that it was impossible to carry a computer this
big to the moon. The Americans wanted to send a man into space before the Russians. To do
this, they realised that they needed powerful but much smaller computers.
American scientists started to research how to improve their computer software and it took a
lot of people and money to come up with the answer. When Apollo 11 finally went to the
moon, it had state-of-the-art computers. And when Neil Armstrong talked to scientists on the
Earth, and then left the moon to go back home, it was all with the help of these computers.
At the time, these were the most impressive and smallest computers ever made.
Despite being so small and impressive, these computers had less power than you probably
have on the mobile phone in your pocket. In fact, the most powerful phones today are more
than 1,000 times faster than Apollo 11’s computers.
The Apollo computers did a great job helping the spaceship fly to the moon and back, but they
could not do half the things that you can do on your mobile phone. With a mobile phone,
Armstrong could have downloaded films, streamed music and shared photos while he was on
the moon.
It is clear that the first journey to the moon really was amazing.
