Coordinate geometry is a branch of mathematics that uses an x-y coordinate plane to represent geometric shapes algebraically. Points on the plane are located using ordered pairs of numbers as coordinates. Common shapes like lines, circles, ellipses, and polygons can be plotted on the coordinate plane and their properties studied algebraically. Rene Descartes is credited with developing the concepts of coordinate geometry by establishing the connection between algebraic equations and geometric curves and figures.

INTRODUCTION TO COORDINATES GEOMETRY

A system of geometry where the position of points on the

plane is described using an ordered pair of numbers.
Every place on this planet has coordinates that help us to
locate it easily on the world map. The coordinates system of
our earth is made up of imaginary lines called latitudes and
longitudes .The zero degree ‘Greenwich Longitude’ and the
zero degree ‘Equator Latitude’ are the starting lines of this
coordinate system. Similarly locating the point in a plane or a
piece of paper, we have the coordinate axes with the
horizontal x-axis and vertical y-axis.
Coordinate geometry is the study of geometric figures by
plotting them in the coordinate axes .Figures such as straight
lines, circles ,ellipse ,hyperbola ,polygons, can be easily
drawn and presented to scale in the coordinate axes .
Further coordinate geometry helps to work algebraically and
study the properties of geometric figures with the help of the
coordinate system.
COORDINATE GEOMETRY
Coordinate geometry is an important branch of math, which
helps in presenting the geometric figures in a two
dimensional plane and to learn the properties of these
figures. Here we shall try to known about the coordinate
plane and the coordinates od a point, to gain an initial
understanding of coordinate geometry.
The concepts of Coordinate geometry were developed by
RENE DESCRATES. He is a French mathematician and
philosopher and he is established an association between
algebraic equations and equations and geometric curves and
figure
The coordinate plane is divided into four parts by X and Y
axes are known as coordinate axes.

Coordinate of a plane ( or) locating of coordinate points:

A quadrant also defined as a part of Cartesian or coordinate
plane obtained when two axes intersect each other.
Quadrant-1(Q1) : x > 0 , y > 0 (+x , +y )
Quadrant -2(Q2) : x < 0 , y > 0 ( -x ,+y)
Quadrant -3(Q3) : x < 0, y < 0 ( -x ,-y)
Quadrant -4(Q4) : x > 0, y < 0(+x , -y)

X coordinate
The X – coordinate of a point is the distance from origin to
foot of perpendicular on X axis . the X cooedinate is also
known as ABSCISSA.
Y coordinate
The Y – coordinate of a point is the distance from origin to
foot of perpendicular on Y axis. The y coordinate is also
known as the ORDINATE.
COORDINATES OF ORIGIN
The point “0” lies on Y axis . its distance from Y axis is zero .
Hence its coordinate is zero . Also it lies on X axis . Its
distance from X axis is zero. Hence its y coordinate is zero.

So the coordinates of the origin “0” are denoted as a ( 0, 0).
