Finding the nth term of an Arithmetic

Sequence, Arithmetic Means and Sum of
Arithmetic Sequence

Introductory Concept

In the previous activity, you have learned how to illustrate, and determine arithmetic
sequence. I know you are excited to know more about arithmetic sequence. Now, in this
activity you will learn the systematic way of finding nth terms and arithmetic means, and
finding the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence. This will give you an idea on
how it is done through the series of activities presented.

Learning Skills

At the end of this packet, you should be able to determine the arithmetic
means, nth term of arithmetic sequence and sum of the terms of a given arithmetic
sequence.
(M10AL- lc-1).

Learning Activities
Finding nth term of an Arithmetic Sequence
In finding the nth of an arithmetic sequence, we use this rule;
an = a1 + (n – 1)d

Example: Find the 6th term of the arithmetic sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …

Solution:
Given:
a1(first term) = 5 n(number of terms) = 6
d(common difference) = 7

Page 1 of 6
DO_Mathematics_Grade 10_Q1_LP 2
an = a1 + (n – 1) d
a6 = 5 + (6 – 1) 7
a6 = 5 + (5)(7)
a6 = 5 + (35)
a6 = 40
The 6th term of the sequence is 40.

Arithmetic Means
- This are the terms between any two nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic
sequence.
- terms m1,m2,…, mk between two numbers a and b such that a, m1, m2 …, mk,
b is an arithmetic sequence.

In the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12, the two arithmetic means between 3 and 12 are 6 and 9.

EXAMPLE Find the arithmetic means between 2 and 8.

Given two arithmetic means, there are four terms in all.

Assume that a1 = 2 and a4 = 8. Let us have the diagram of the sequence.
2 , __, __, 8
a1, a2, a3, a4
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
8 = 2 + (4 – 1)d
8 = 2 + 3d
8 – 2 = 3d
6 = 3d
d=2
Since the first term, a1, is given and d = 2, then it will be easy for us to find
the arithmetic means.
Hence, a2 = 2 + 2 a3 = 4 + 2
a2 = 4 a 3= 6
The two arithmetic means between 2 and 8 are 4 and 6.

EXAMPLE Find the five arithmetic means between 5 and 47.

Given five arithmetic means, there are seven terms in all. Assume that a 1 = 5
and a7 = 47. Let us have the diagram of the sequence.
5 , __, __, __, __, __, 47
a1, a2, a3 , a4 , a5 , a6 , a7
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
47 = 5 + (7 – 1)d

Page 2 of 6
DO_Mathematics_Grade 10_Q1_LP 2
47 = 5 + 6d
47 – 5 = 6d
42 = 6d
d=7
Hence, a2= 5 + 7 = 12
a3 = 5 + 14 = 19
a4 = 5 + 21 = 26
a5 = 5 + 28 = 33
a6 = 5 + 35 = 40
The numbers 12, 19, 26, 33, and 40 are the arithmetic means between 5 and 47.
Arithmetic Series
-Is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence with a definite number
of terms

We can write the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic series as:
Sn=a1+(a1+d)+(a1+2d)+…+(an−d)+an

We can also reverse the order of the terms and write the sum as
Sn=an+(an−d)+(an−2d)+…+(a1+d)+a1
If we add these two expressions for the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic
series, we can derive a formula for the sum of the first n terms of any arithmetic
series.

Sn=a1+(a1+d)+(a1+2d)+…+(an−d)+an
+ Sn=an+(an−d)+(an−2d)+…+(a1+d)+a1
2Sn=(a1+an)+(a1+an)+…+(a1+an)

Because there are n terms in the series, we can simplify this sum to

2Sn=n(a1+an)

We divide by 2 to find the formula for the sum of the first n terms of an
arithmetic series.

𝑺𝒏 = (𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝒏 ) or 𝑺𝒏 = [𝟐𝒂𝟏 + (𝒏 − 𝟏)𝒅]

In the arithmetic sequence –3, 4, 11, 18, …, find the

EXAMPLE sum of the first 20 terms.

Use Formula 2 to find the sum.

Page 3 of 6
DO_Mathematics_Grade 10_Q1_LP 2
EXAMPLE Find the sum of the multiples of 3 between 28 and 112.

The first multiple of 3 between 28 and 112 is 30, and the last multiple of 3
between 28 and 112 is 111. In order to use Formula 1, the number of terms
must be known. an = a1 + ( n – 1) d can be used to find n.

an=111, a1= 30 , d= 3

111= 30 +( n-1) 3
81= ( n-1 ) (3)
27= ( n-1)
28= n

Now, use Formula 1.

The sum of the multiples of 3 between 28 and 112 is 1974.

Write the letter of the correct answer on the blank provided.
