1. UNDERSTANDING FACIAL FEATURES

1.1 Eyes

The eyes are the most important feature for

achieving a true likeness. They also reveal the
mood or emotion of the person you are drawing.
Study and practise the diagrams showing how to
block in frontal and profile views of eyes .

● Key facts about the geometry of the eye.

● The eyeball is a sphere.

To perfect the look of an eye, visualise the sphere of the eyeball. This will help you understand how each aspect of the eye is
connected spatially, regardless of what is actually visible once you add other elements of a character’s face. The skin
surrounding the eye, the eyelid, the eyelashes, the tear ducts, and more — it all wraps around the ocular orb. What we typically
think of as the eye shape is actually the shape of the upper and lower eyelid and how they cover the eye socket.

● The pupil is not on the surface of the eye.

The iris is the colored circular area of the eye and takes up a large portion of the part of the eyeball visible between the eyelids.
While it is commonly believed to, the pupil does not sit right on the surface of the eyeball, but is actually recessed into the iris,
under the surface of the translucent cornea. This is important to remember when drawing eyes from the side. Placing the pupil
underneath the outer line of the eyeball will increase the realism in your drawing.

Noses can be easily developed from simple straight The nostrils enhance the personality of the

is accurate.

Ears Usually connect to the head at a slight angle. To draw and

ear, first sketch the general shape and divide it into thirds.
Sketch the “ridges” of the ear with light lines, studying where
they fall in relation to the division lines. These ridges indicate
where to bring out the grooves in the ear, you should shade
heavier inside them.

The lower portion of the nose is made

of cartilage, while the upper portion is
supported by bone. Also the tip of the
nose usually has a slight ball shape.

The diagram to the right illustrates how the nose

1.3 LIPS
Lips can me very easy to draw if you study
their form closely. For example, notice that
the top lip often protrudes slightly over the
Bottom one. You should also familiarize
Yourself with various planes of the lips to
Shade them well.

To draw the lips, block in the overall mouth

shape with preliminary guidelines. One you
have satisfactory line drawing, you can begin
Shading, paying particular attention to where
the highlights are located. Highlights enhances
the lip fullness.
When drawing men’s lips, Keep the
shading light or they may appear as
though they are covered with lipstick.
Also, note that men’s lips generally
do not appear as full as women.
