ASSIGNMENT 3_ THERMODYNAMICS AND PHYSICAL EQUILIBRIA

1. A sample of 1.13 g of pure carbon was burned in excess oxygen in a bomb

calorimeter. The temperature increased from 24.6 to 31.1 °C. Calculate the amount
of heat released when one mole of carbon is burned knowing that the heat capacity
of the calorimeter is 5.71 kJ/°C. (Sol:-394.8 kJ/mol)

2. Calculate ∆G°, ∆H° and ∆S° at 25 °C for the fermentation reaction:

C6H12O6(ac)→2C2H5OH(ac)+2CO2(g)
Is there a temperature at which the reaction is not spontaneous?
C6H12O6 (aq) C2H5OH (aq) CO2 (g)
∆H°f (kJ/mol) -1263.1 -288.3 -393.5
∆G°f (kJ/mol) -914.5 -181.6 -394.4
(Sol: ∆G°= -237.5 kJ/mol, ∆H°= -100.5 kJ/mol and ∆S°= 459J/mol·K. No)

3. Determine the enthalpy of reaction for: 2 CH4(g) + 3 O2(g)  2 CO (g) + 4 H2O(l),

from the enthalpies of combustion of methane and carbon monoxide, which are,
respectively, –890 kJ·mol-1 and –283 kJ·mol-1. (Sol.: –1214 kJ·mol-1)

4. A solution contains 100 g of toluene (92 g/mol) and 100 g of benzene (78 g/mol). At
20 °C the vapor pressure of pure benzene is 74.7 Torr and that of toluene is 22.3
Torr. Calculate the vapor pressure of the mixture at 20 °C and the composition of the
vapor in equilibrium with the solution. (Sol: P=50.6Torr. In the vapor Xtol=0.20 Torr)

5. When 1.0 g of urea CO(NH2)2 is dissolved in 200 g of solvent A, the freezing point of
A decreases by 0.250 °C. When 1.5 g of solute Y, which is a non-electrolyte, are
dissolved in 125 g of solvent A, the freezing point of A decreases by 0.200 °C.
Calculate the molecular weight of Y. (Sol: 180 g/mol)

6. A certain compound contains 54.54% carbon, 9.09 % hydrogen and 36.37% oxygen.
When 7.59 g of this compound are dissolved in 300 g of benzene, its freezing point
decreases by 1.47ºC (Kf = 5.12 K·kg/mol). Determine both the empirical and the
molecular formulas, and suggest (and name) four possible structural isomers. (Sol.:
C2H4O; C4H8O2)
