Science 5

The lesson plan aims to teach 5th grade students how changes in matter affect the environment through a variety of activities exploring concepts like composting, recycling, and the effects of burning materials. Students will learn through games, group work examining pictures in different learning areas of the classroom, and completing worksheets. The lesson incorporates assessment through a multiple choice quiz to evaluate student understanding of how changes in matter can have both positive and negative environmental impacts.

Applicant Name: JONATHAN A. URGEL

Subject: Science Topic: Changes in Matter and Its Grade Level: 5
Effect in the Environment

Student Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

1. Explain how changes in matter affect the environment.

Materials Needs:

1. Science 5 Module
2. PowerPoint Presentation slides
3. Pictures
4. Activity sheets
5. Laptop
6. Projector
Activities/Procedures:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
4. Setting of Classroom Rules

B. Developmental Activities

Drill
Let us have a game. I will show you
a series of letters. Arrange them properly
to find the hidden words.

ELICIT

Open your module on page 1 and answer

“What I Know” numbers 1-10. Write your answers on
your Science notebook.

Engage

Let us examine the following

pictures and tell me what will happen to
the object if we apply heat on it.

Explore

Now, we will have a trip inside the

classroom. I will group you into five.
The classroom has five learning
areas. Each of them offers a different picture
and activities that you will observe and examine.
You can write your answers on your Science
notebook.

I will assign each group to a

designated learning area. After 2 minutes,
you will proceed to the next learning area
until you finish visiting all learning areas.

Before we do that, let us recall

the guidelines in doing an activity. What
is the first step?

That’s right. What else?

Let us start the activity.

(Designated learning areas for the groups:)

Group 1 – Area 1
Group 2 – Area 2
Group 3 – Area 3
Group 4 – Area 4
Group 5 – Area 5

Differentiated Instruction/Activities

Learning Area 1: Good or Bad Effects on the

Environment

Learning Area 2: Choose the Best!

Learning Area 3: Do the Right Thing

Learning Area 4: Yes or No

Learning Area 5: Express yourself

Explain

Let us examine and hear your

answers in the activity.
Each group shall have a designated
speaker to present what they’ve observed
in a learning area.
Each group will only present their
answers in the first learning area that they visited.

Elaboration

Some changes in matter results in

good effects in the environment. Composting,
recycling, and the use of technology are some
examples of the good effects of the changes in
materials. Composting is a way of decomposing
plant or animal matter into fertilizer. Recycling
helps lessen garbage by reusing them like plastic,
Styrofoam, old tires, and paper.

To further understand the lesson, let

us have an activity. Open your Science module
and answer “What’s More” Letter A found on
page 6. Write your answers on your Science
notebook.

Evaluate
Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer to complete the thought of the paragraph.
Choose your answer from the words inside the box.

OFF SCHOOL ACTIVITY (Assignment)

Directions: List down activities that you can do with the following materials to save and protect the
environment. Write your answers on your Science notebook.
1. left-over food
2. rusted tin cans
3. empty boxes

Assessment:

Directions: Read and answer the questions carefully. These focus on explaining how changes in matter
affect the environment. Encircle the letter of the best answer.

environment?
A. slicing fruits
B. sewing clothes
C. peeling vegetables
D. breaking empty bottles of liquor

2. The following are effects in the environment by the changes in matter. Which of these has a good
effect on the environment?
A. air pollution
B. composting
C. deforestation
D. water pollution

3. Many families use wood as fuel in cooking food. What is the bad effect on the environment of this
activity?
A. deforestation
B. air pollution
C. land pollution
D. water pollution

environment?
A. throw garbage into the river
B. scatter candy wrappers in the backyard
C. cut out candy wrappers to make pillows

5. Water pollution is one of the bad effects in the environment by the changes in matter. Which of the
following can minimize bad effects in the bodies of water?
A. oil spills from a cargo ship
B. bringing trash bins when having a picnic in the beach
C. throwing detergents and other chemicals in the river
D. using bath soap and shampoo in swimming at the beach

things to happen again?
A. Make forest into residential areas.
B. Throw garbage anywhere you want.
C. Plant more trees in our surroundings.
D. Cut more trees to build more things at home.

8. Tin cans with rust are being recycled by putting spray paint. Why does this activity cause harm to the
environment?
A. Spray paints are expensive.
B. Spray paints can prevent the spread of rust.
C. Spray paints are sometimes unavailable in the market.
D. Spray paints have a poisonous chemical that makes the air polluted.

9. When land is dumped with garbage, the land becomes polluted. The polluted land will serve as the
breeding places for pests that carry germs, hence dangerous to human health. As a child, you can do the
following activities to avoid this problem, except one.
