    I. Define Respiratory Care.

    Respiratory care means the health specialty responsible for the treatment,
    management, diagnostic testing, control, and care of patients with deficiencies
    and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system.

    II. Give 5 examples of clinical areas encompassing Respiratory Care.

    1. Oxygen Therapy- is a treatment that provides you with supplemental, or


    extra, oxygen. It can help you fell better and stay active.

    2. Aerosol Therapy- is routinely used in pulmonary critical care. Is a


    technique of administering medication directly into the airway and lungs.

    3. Mechanical Ventilation-artificial respiration using a mechanical


    ventilator to support the delivery of oxygen to the lungs when breathing
    has ceases , is failing , or is inadequate.

    4. Airway Management- is the assessment, planning, and series of medical


    procedures required to maintain or restore an individual's ventilation, or
    breathing. By maintaining an open airway, air can flow from the nose and
    mouth into the lungs.
    5. Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics and Pulmonary Function Testing- An
    exercise test monitors lung and heart function before, during and after
    exercise.

    III. Describe the role of a Respiratory Therapist.

    A respiratory therapist (RT) is trained to help people with lung diseases or


    disorders that can result from a myriad of issues. Meeting and examining
    with patients who have pulmonary diseases, disorders, or complications.
    Conducting, performing, and analyzing diagnostic and function tests to
    assess lung capacity and capability. Working with physicians and nurses to
    create treatment plans. Treating patients with aerosol medications and
    chest physiotherapy. Evaluating progress of treatment and administering
    inhalants. Documenting care by updating charts and records. Operating
    mechanical ventilators and other machines. Completing discharge planning
    by working with other members of the medical team. Training patients how
    to administer treatments and use equipment on their own. Recommending
    equipment and treatment for outpatient or home health. Protecting
    patients (and other healthcare employees) through stringent protocols.
