1. THE PROJECT PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

1.1 Introduction

In today’s modern and global world, the importance and added values

provided by Network infrastructure is evident whether it is for business enterprises,

government entities or educational institutions particularly universities. It

contributes to achieve important goals such as more productivity, collaboration,

efficiency and acquire knowledge. The revolution in computer networking

technology today demands for high bandwidth, short response time, reliable

network, guaranteed application services and optimum LAN traffic flow. Increased

use of Information technologies in the university, business operations and hanging

customer needs requires a robust technical infrastructure and adequate network

architecture. Therefore, analysis of network performance is very important to

maintain and improve network efficiency from time to time.

In few years’ time the number of computer, laptop and smart phones users

in CPSC will be increased as each employee gets their own desktop computer or

laptop. Even though, all transactions are operated manually in Catarman Campus

it will be good idea to upgrade their transactions to support organization's business

policy and user requirements. Therefore, network infrastructure must be

2

implemented to acquire good performance of the organizational transactions, good

condition in order to provide appropriate quality of service (QoS) and to satisfy

demanding users. So, it is more imperative to study & analyze the infrastructure

with a view of gauging its efficiency.

Information regarding Network issues and technical requirements was

gathered first to ease analysis of existing transaction in Camiguin Polytechnic

State College (CPSC) Catarman Campus. As of now there is no current

Infrastructure use in the said campus, which the researcher chooses to create a

design for the campus to address the needs of each users. The goal of this

research is to propose an architecture model suitable for college campus network

with meet and adapt to the specific requirements of such kind of network

environment and provides characteristics like flexibility, scalability and

manageability. The main advantage and importance of this architecture is that it

adapts the specifics requirements of campus network.

In this research users will enable both internal and remote employees

connected to the computer network to share documents, files, calendars and other

information in the institution and according to (Soon, 2010) “Intranet helps to

capture business intelligence”.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

In the search for greater competitiveness, SUC’s are investing massively in

the constant advances of the Information Technology (IT). SUC’s leaders are

facing a significant number of challenges to maintain the competition, respond to a

rapidly changing environment, and enhance academic strengths.

The Camiguin Polytechnic State College of Catarman campus face a

degree of problematic experience in delivering an effective working management

into different departments. Since, network infrastructure is not integrated over the

campus they mostly encounter problem in transmitting of information or

4

transactions. Collaborative activities and providing good services over the campus

were impeded.

As users, accessing of the majority of the information they need depends

on the network in order to do their jobs and to transport their messages with

reliability, the network must be able to provide resilient, intelligent transport. The

reliable network design also needs to incorporate versatility in order to address the

changing needs of an organization.

In this connection the architecture proposed in this study will cooperate to

provide a network that can respond to current and future College technology

demands. To achieve the above purposes the researcher focuses first on the

definition of architecture, second on the access network services or layout and

third in the management system. To verify, this paper layout an experiment

campus network is carried out.

1.4 Objective of the Study

Generally, the program aims to design network infrastructure for Camiguin

Polytechnic State College Catarman campus. The propose design will serve as

the solution to address the impeding processes to each offices and providing great
5

opportunity to experience internet and intranet facilities. This network environment

and provides characteristics like flexibility, scalability and manageability.

Specifically, the goal of this research is to propose an architecture model

suitable for campus network need by the people of CPSC Catarman Campus with

meet and adapt to the specific requirements of Wireless and Wired Area

Network.

1.5 Significance of the study

In the information age providing a high-quality information technology

infrastructure has become fundamental to accomplish strategic objectives. A

strong network is the basic starting point for these achievements. At the campus

level, institutions are investing financial and human resources to enhance campus

network to support new technologies and services. However without a well-defined

and clear architecture model that can be followed during the network design

process it make difficult to achieve their goals. They lack a standard architecture

model.

Over the past years, the CPSC Catarman Campus have recognized the

importance of network as essential to their research and teaching mission. The

College is making efforts to ensure to deliver a good services to their clienteles,

6

which producing network infrastructure to be reliable, secure, adaptable, flexible,

scalable, and fault tolerant.

The main advantage of this research is to propose a model that can be a

standard architecture model for campus network. A model that is flexible, robust

and supports a multitude of services demands currently faced by the Camiguin

campus environment. This research proposes network architecture and entities

suitable for CPSC campus specific requirements. It is built in modular and flexible

way which makes it easy for future-growth. It definitely benefited users and

customers of CPSC Catarman Campus because with better network performance

users can perform well their tasks and provide better service to customers. IT

officers of the campus also gained more knowledge about network analysis and

design for optimum network performance.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The project focused on Camiguin Polytechnic State College Catarman

Campus. Specifically on the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless Local Area

Network (WLAN) connection in the college. All suggestions to build a network

infrastructure is dependent on the cost and capability of the college. To address

the
7

problem in catarman campus the researcher uses available materials and

equipment to model the needs and requirements of campus area network design

of Catarman Campus. Actual footage of modeling the design is conducted.

1.7 Output of the Study

The outputs from this study provides information about requirements

analysis table of network design for the college. Diagram of the network topology

model, the physical and logical design for proposed network were produced. The

basic network architecture and radio configuration were simulated through actual

hands-on using available materials by the College. This simulations will provide

clear functionality of the said propose study.

2. METHODOLOGY

The researcher use applied methods of research in the study. The study apply

Network Development Methodology that come up with LAN and Wireless Network Plan.

2.1 PROJECT SETTING

9

In this study, data were collected at Camiguin Polytechnic State College in

the Catarman Campus area. The area composes of college department which are

the Education Department and the Agriculture Department. The college also has

its own Registrar Office, one room for computer laboratory, Finance Office,

Student Council Office and Library Building and soon. And based on the

geographical location of the deployment site, the researcher will going to provide a

wireless local area network (WLAN) to connect building that is far from the other

building and local area network (LAN).

4. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

The Camiguin Polytechnic State College embracing the demand of new technology.

Through the implementation of the network infrastructure it gives emphasis to the change

of traditional processes in the system of CPSC. It integrates the LAN and WAN

infrastructure. It uses radio to capture and transmit processes from one building to

another building and in the future study for the betterment of the campus, system

processes must adhere to the main campus policies and procedures. It must apply VLAN

and include also bandwidth bonding in the infrastructure.
