    Exercise 5.4: Analyzing Enthymemes

    1. If you love your pet, don’t eat meat.


    Major premise: You cannot eat meat and love your pet
    Minor Premise: I love my pet.
    Conclusion: Therefore, I don’t eat meat. This is logical and true.

    2. War is terrorism.
    Major Premise: Two things with the same qualities are identical.
    Minor Premise: War and Terrorism create havoc.
    Conclusion: War is terrorism. This is logical, with an illogical basis.

    3. Real men don’t ask for directions.


    Major Premise: Real men don’t ask for directions.
    Minor Premise: Some men ask for directions.
    Conclusion: Therefore, they are not real men. This is logical and true; there can be
    only one conclusion to the premises.

    4. Immigration is the sincerest form of flattery.


    Major Premise: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
    Minor Premise: Immigrants imitate the culture which they chose to reside.
    Conclusion: Therefore, immigration is the sincerest form of flattery. This is logical
    but not necessarily true.

    5. I eat local because I can.


    Major Premise: All people who can eat locally should.
    Minor premise: I can eat locally.
    Conclusion: Therefore, I should eat locally. This is logical but not necessarily true.

    6. Vote nobody for president 2020.


    Major Premise: All people who voted for the other guy are not to be blamed. Minor
    Premise: I voted for the other guy.
    Conclusion: Therefore, I am not to be blamed. This is logical and true.

    7. I read banned books.


    Major Premise: The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a banned book.
    Minor Premise: I read The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

    Conclusion: I read banned books. This is logical and true.

    8. Love is the only solution.


    Major Premise: There is only one solution.
    Minor Premise: Love is a solution.
    Conclusion: Love is the only solution. This is logical and true.

    9. It’s a child, not a choice.


    Major Premise: All children are not a choice.
    Minor Premise: Unborn babies are children.
    Conclusion: Unborn babies are children not a choice. This is logical and true.

    10. Buy American.


    Major Premise: Purchasing American made products strengthens your country’s
    economy.
    Minor Premise: Strengthening your country’s economy is patriotic.
    Conclusion: Therefore, purchasing American made products is patriotic. This is
    logical and true.
