Aim
• To measure the wavelength of red light by Young’s fringes.
Procedure
S White paper
M Wall
± 0.5 m
L
1. Setup the apparatus, laser source (M), double-slit (S), white paper, near a wall as in diagram
above. Use 0.1 mm separation double-slit.
2. Radiate the laser beam from laser source M onto double slit S. Ensure that S is vertically
mounted.
3. Double slit, S, shall be placed about 0.5 m from laser source, M.
4. Pick up the light transmitted by S on a piece of blank white paper fixed to a wall which is
located about 2 m away from S.
5. Coloured fringes, or Young’s interference should be seen on the white paper.
6. Measure the distance occupied by 10 dark fringes by using the plastic ruler and calculate the
average distance between dark fringes. Take at least 3 measurements.
7. Measure the distance, L, from S to the white paper.
8. Calculate the wavelength of the laser beam, λ.
9. Repeat steps (1) to (8) above by using 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm double-slits.
10. Calculate the average wavelength of the laser beam.
Data and Calculation
Standard wavelength of the laser source as in the product specification is, λstd = (650 ± 10) m.
Deviation from the standard wavelength of the laser source, %(∆λ):
λ − λstd
%(∆λ ) =ave x100%
λstd
Note:
Your discussion shall emphasize on the factors that contribute to the deviation error, %(∆λ), and how
to improve it.
