CONTEXTUALIZATION, ADAPTATION, AND

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

 Contextualization
 Adaptation
 Classroom Management

WHAT IS CONTEXTUALIZATION?
• Contextualization is employing the items of the language in a meaningful and
relevant context. This helps the learners to acquire new skills and knowledge.

CONTEXTUALIZATION

 Resourcefulness and self-expression are some of the skills that can be developed through art
practice and creation, especially in elementary students.
 Contextualizing the art materials based on what is needed and available is part of the creative
art process.
 good art is flexible, arbitrary, and spontaneous.
 If the teacher can make the lesson more relevant to the students if they use everyday themes or
materials that they can relate to.

EXAMPLES

Airplane using plastic bottles

Butterfly using dry leaves
Painting using stone as canvas
WHAT IS ADOPTION?

 Adoption means a change in the teaching process, materials, assignments, or pupil

products to assist a pupil to achieve the expected learning outcomes.

Adapting tools and activities

 As a teacher, we have to ensure the active participation of all students, with or without
special needs.
 Some of them need more support than others whether it is physical, mental, behavioral,
or socio-emotional.

ADAPTIVE TOOLS FOR DRAWING AND WRITING

 Tissue rolls for stuff or weak grips
 Weighted pencils using metal hex nuts for stability and body awareness.
 Triangular pongee for small hands and better grip
 Plastic or you ball for a larger grip
 Pen with lance attached to the wrist to secure the pencil back to the center of the
thumb and index finger

DIFFERENTIATION AND MODIFICATION

 Art teachers are not creative in coming up with art lessons. But in differentiating their
activities as well.
 Task and expectations can be modified into level 1, level 2, and level 3 according to
difficulty

EXAMPLE LESSON ON WATERCOLOR BEACH

PAINTING.

Level 1 (Top)
Uses oil pastels to outline and create a barrier between the colors.
Level 2 (Bottom) Uses only pencil for outline.

THREE LEVELS OF DRAWING PROFILE

Level 1
Is a very simple, circular shape for the head
Level 2
Which has more curves
Level 3
Which is anime-like illustration.

EXAMPLES OF TEACHING HOW TO DRAW HUMAN FIGURE

Level 1
Stencils are used where students trace the cutout shape.
Level 2
Students can copy the cutout shapes side-by-side as they draw.
Level 3
Can draw independently and from memory with minimal guidance from the
teacher.

WHAT IS CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT?

 Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and
techniques organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and
academically productive during a class.

STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING THE CLASSROOM

TIME MANAGEMENT
 Art production can be very time-consuming. It takes time to set up and clean up.
Sometimes when you are in the zone or when they are engaged, your kids even lose
track of time.
 If you notice that a student is working slower than the rest, it is best to point out what
parts are taking so long.
EAMPLE
A STUDENT TAKES A LONG TIME TO PERFECT THE DRAWING OF THE SHAPE OF THE FACE.
Teacher should…
1. Tell him it is okay for it to be not perfect.
2. Help him find a way to make it perfect.
3. If it is really taking so long you can do it for him but only on that specific part.

MANAGING STUDENT EXPECTATIONS THROUGH VISUAL SCHEDULE CARDS

 Visual cards help the students keep track of the process.

 Students tend to get more engaged when they know what are supposed to do next and
when they know how much more they need to do.
SETTING UP THE TEACHER’S DEMO AREA AND STUDENT WORKSPACE

 Position yourself in a space where you can see all students and all students can see you.
Seeing arrangement and classroom layout are also important because these dictates
how students interact and share materials.

EXAMPLE
DEMO TABLE
A teacher needs a demo table to put his or her materials.
WORK AREA/STUDENTS’ SEATING ARRANGEMENT.
Students should have ample workspace. Ideally, a long table that is waterproof should
be used.
STATIONS TO MAKE YOUR ART ROOM MORE MANAGEABLE
You can lay out the room with designated areas. Wash area, drying wash area, materials
are, work area and arts display area.
