Uxmal

The ancient city of Uxmal was built between 700-1000 CE in Yucatan, Mexico by the Xiues civilization. Uxmal has important architecture like the Nunnery Quadrangle and Pyramid of the Magician that represents Mayan culture and religion. It was an important political and economic center until it was abandoned in 1080 CE after an internal revolution. Uxmal provides insight into the Mayan classical period and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 for its cultural significance.

UXMAL
Time
The ancient city of Uxmal was built during the

late classical period (700-1000) and was left

behind in 1,080 as a consecuence of a revolution

between the citizens and the elite members.

Location
Uxmal, which name means "3 times built", is

located in Yucatan, to be more exactly it is in

Santa Elena and has the same importance as

Chichen Itza and Tikal.

Characteristics
With fertile soil and more than 160 chuttunnels

that recolect water from the rain and bring it to

all the city because in that zone there isn't any

other water source

The seer's pyramid


It's one of the most important buildings of Uxmal,

which was a ceremonial center with sculped

effigies of Chaac, god of rain and it is said that

it was built by a dwarf in only one night.

Civilization
In this ancient city used to live the Xiues, a group

of Mayan citizens with a population of 25,000,

there the economical and political power was

control by some individuals that were recognized

as the intermediaries between the humans and

the gods.

Why is part of our Heritage?


Uxmal is of cultural importance because its

architecture is the most represantive of the Puuc

region and its iconograpy that representsthe

mayan cosmology and its connection with the

enviroment.
