Introduction
Religion has a profound influence on the development of culture
and civilization throughout the span of world history. It is an
important lens through which to gain a more complete cultural
context. Religion not only impacts political, economic, and social
institutions, but also influences conflict, art, language, and
literature. Not only is the study of religion important for historical
and cultural context. It also prepares us for daily life in a
religiously diverse country through understanding of religious
beliefs and practices.
The Task
In order to gain an understanding of the basic beliefs and practices
of the 5 major world religions, students will create PowerPoint
presentations over 1 of the 5 major world religions. These include
Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Students
should include in their presentations how/when the religion began,
the supreme being(s), core beliefs and practices, holy book(s),
important people, common symbols, and holy days/holidays.
Students should also create a physical representation of an
important symbol or relic of their religion. Upon completion
students will present their findings to the class.
The Process
To accomplish the task students will be broken into groups of two.
Each group will be given a religion to research. Upon forming a
group and picking a religion students will begin research core
beliefs, practices, and aspects of their religion. They will then
create a PowerPoint presentation and physical relic that will be
presented in class.
