1.1 AN INDEPENDENT T-TEST FOR GENDER

Step 1: Write a question for each categorical variable and define null and alternative
hypothesis

1. Is there any difference in the total overall level of level of intention across gender (Male
and Female)?

Step 2: Identify one categorical and one continuous variable

1. One categorical variable: Gender (1-Male, 2-Female)

2. One continuous variable: Overall level of intention

Step 3: Copy the Independent t-test output and explain the result

1) Define Null and Alternative Hypothesis

H0: μ male= μ female

H1: μ female ≠ male

2) State Alpha

α = 0.05

3) Calculate Degree of freedom

df = (n1 -1) + (n2 - 1)

(50-1) + (4-1)
= 52
4) State Decision Rule

By refer to the table t-test by two tailed test = (+/- 2.000)

If it is less than -2.000, or greater than 2.000, reject the null hypothesis.

5) Calculate test statistic

(3.63−3.11)
t= √ 0.371 0.371 (refer to the figure 1)
+
50 4

= 1.643

6) State Results

Do not reject H0 , as t = 1.643 > p = 0.05

7) Conclusion

There was no significant difference between the level of intention of female and male,
as t = 1.643 > p =0.05. Hence, from the result in Figure 1, there was no significant
difference in mean level of intention of males (N= 4, SD= 0.438), and females (N=50,
SD= 0.722).

1.2 AN INDEPENDENT T-TEST FOR YEARS OF STUDY / AGE

Step 1: Write a question for each categorical variable

1. Does there any difference in the total overall level of intention by years of study (Non-
final year and final year)?

Step 2: Identify one categorical and one continuous variable

1. One categorical variable: Years of study (1-Non-final year and 2-Final year)
2. One continuous variable: Overall level of intention

Step 3: Copy the Independent t-test output and explain the result
