And so it begins...

hree years ago an idea started to form, the possibility of an international camp of co-operation and co-operatives not just to discuss and play with and explore those concepts but a living, breathing, changing, challenging community that embodied and celebrated them. A group of individuals started to talk about it, General Council got on board and in 2009 Woodcraft Folks Annual Gathering voted that they supported the idea and that we as a movement should commit to making it happen. At regional gatherings up and down the country, and IFM events across the world, ideas, offers of help and challenges poured in; in districts and groups our young people and leaders alike started to solidify that dream, to make that tiny idea into a massive reality In 2010 our members voted on how the menu should work, on aiming to be a carbon neutral event and on the way programme happens on camp. It was decided that every member would be a part of making that happen, that each person coming to CoCamp would bring a workshop or a game to play, a skill to share or an idea to discuss and an open mind. That together we would build a camp far more varied, far more innovative, far more

exciting and radical than any of us could dream of alone. The bookings came pouring in, from across the UK and throughout the wider world.

A living, breathing, changing, challenging community

Woodcraft Folk districts ran cake sales and sponsored leap frogs; jumble sales and ceilidhs; bag packing and bike rides to raise the money for other IFM-SEI organisations. Districts submitted programme ideas and the Town Librarians started work to put these offers into our CoCamp programme. Over email and via post, through facebook and twitter our co-operative has been built by its members. And now, after years of planning, months of administrating, weeks of assembling and days of making, we are finally all here together, at CoCamp, ready to realise our vision of a co-operative community that will start here in Walesby over the next ten days, and live in the future as we each take the new skills, ideas, friendships and memories we have made back to our homes, our schools and our work places and say THIS IS POSSIBLE!

Many of us have been deeply shocked by the events at the AUF (Workers Youth League/Youth of the Labour Party) Camp in Utya, Norway. Woodcraft Folk and its members express their deep condolences at this tragedy. We understand the importance of bringing young people together

through mutual dialogue, friendship and political debate at camps and express our abhorrence at such an attack on democracy. Many of our members have camped or shared events with AUF members and this attack is an attack on us all. We stand behind the words of the AUF president, Eskil Pedersen: AUF and the ideas of AUF will live

on, we will never give up in our struggle for what we believe in. We will, as the Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said earlier, meet terror with more democracy. Only through more openness and democracy will we combat hatred and terror such as this. We, with our comrades from across the worldwide socialist movement, stand today in solidarity with our friends in Norway and

against the growing European extreme right. Today we are all AUF activists! In the build up to our international festival, CoCamp, we are determined to make sure that we support our Norwegian comrades in their continued struggle against far right extremism and will send messages of our support from CoCamp, where young people from around the world are gathering this week. The DF movement is growing at an amazing rate, but sadly the Woodcraft Folk as a whole doesnt follow this trend. It is instead decreasing in size. I personally believe we as DFs can help the Folk grow again. Over the years DFs have traditionally been the backbone of many districts and other locally based things, but currently

the DF movement is mainly concentrated on building and organizing itself. This is itself is a good thing, but as individuals we need to also remember our roots and get involved locally. Many DFs were once Venturers, Pioneers or Elfins. When we were younger, DFs and adults volunteered their time to make our group nights happen. So surely it seems it would only be right to give back and help our districts. There are many DFs who already help out, some even going as far as running

districts. I think that if everyone in DFs did something small or large to help their local district or maybe even starting up a new district we could help the Folk grow strong again. If youre still living where you did when you were an Elfin, Pioneer or Venturer you could help out there. Or if youve moved away from your district for uni or other reasons; or joined Woodies as a DF; contact your regional rep and they will do their best to put you in contact with local districts. So you have no excuses now. What can I do for my district? I hear you ask. Well first you need to contact your district, then you can do a variety of things from assisting in an Elfin group, to running district wide events. Why do DFs help a district grow? Might also be lingering in your mind. Well a strong district is like a tree, the elfins and pioneers are the roots, they grow older then become venturers, who in turn become DFs who are like the fruit, as they can help another generation of Elfins and Pioneers grow. Helping out with a group can keep it alive and fun, causing the Elfins to stay on and become Pioneers, the Pioneers become Venturers and finally the Venturers become DFs. Venturer groups can be where the most people are lost and some stimulating DFs can help keep the venturers involved. Not only this but it strengthens the link between Venturers and DFs. Helping with group nights can also be rewarding, you get to see future generations of DFs grow and have fun. It can also give you a heightened sense of responsibility and grownupness and puts out a good message about DFs. All of these strengthen the links between DFs and Kinsfolk. If group nights arent the thing for you or you just want to do more for your district you could run an

There is little in the way of words that can evoke our feelings or reactions on hearing about the horrific attacks which have taken place in Norway, but we felt that as DFs as Woodies it is important to send our regards and solidarity to the AUF and our friends in Europe. Many of us have shared camps, exchanges and friendships with other

The attack against our friends of AUF, Norway, is a true tragedy. Today we have received the news that more than 80 of the comrades of UF were killed. It is unbelievably sad. The friends of AUF gathered to hold their yearly summer camp at Utya. To discuss, meet friends and enjoy life. A paradise was turned into hell through an unjustifiable act of violence. In this time of challenge and sorrow we listen and gather. We, IUSY and ECOSY, and all of our member organizations around the world express our deep condolences with our friends of AUF in these difficult times. We all feel deep sorrow. Our hearts and minds are with the victims and their families. The attack on AUF is an attack on all of us, our values and principles. We will continue our struggle for democracy, human rights and equality; for a multicultural society and the fight against right wing extremism. We are meeting on Monday for our IUSY World Festival. In our hearts and thoughts our friends from AUF are with us. We stand together in solidarity. Whats this IFM thing then? I hear you say! Woodcraft Folk, ever since a very young age has been a member of the International Falcon Movement Socialist Education International, an umbrella movement of socialist youth movements from around the world. Its a super-cool organisation with such a fascinating bunch of organisations making up its membership each with their own particular style of working, their own stories, games and songs to share and their own challenges. Recently, on Woodcraft Folks behalf, I attended the annual International Committee meeting of IFM on Woodcraft Folks behalf and below are a few insights

Our thoughts and love go out to the victims and their families. There are already plans in motion to collectively send our condolences to those who have been subjected to this appalling act of violence from CoCamp. Here are some words from the ECOSY website which we wholeheartedly echo.

As well as representing Woodcraft Folk, I also was at the meeting on the behalf of CoCamp. My key message to share with our international comrades was to promote the need for everyone coming to camp to think about what they can contribute to the programme of the camp anything from workshops to games to songs to whatever! Whatever they did in their countries, they should do at CoCamp. This message I shared with them, I share with you! DFs have produced a number of resources which you can use in your villages at camp and we strongly encourage you to get heavily involved in your villages and towns at camp.

When we come to CoCamp, we will be creating an alternative community, and some of the ways that our community works will be different to the world outside.

CoCamp operates its own system of time

and any times given for meetings, workshops or meals will be given in CoCamp Time. On the last night of CoCamp, at the closing ceremony, we will set our watches back to BST, and regain the hour we lost to give us more chance to make merry and say our farewells. While on camp, where there is any room for doubt, e.g. when dealing with anyone in the outside world, please remember to specify to CoCampers whether you are giving times in BST or CCT!

During CoCamp, one of the many differences between our camp and the rest of the UK will be that CoCamp operates its own system of time. Following the success of this initiative at 2010s V-Camp, we will be adopting CoCamp Time, which will be an hour ahead of British Summer Time (BST). This helps us make the most of the

From discussing membership and governance, to sharing stories of how we combat child poverty of health issues in our own particular organisations it was an action packed weekend!One hot topic right at the centre of much of the work of IFM is a project called Volunteers Against Poverty. The core aim of the project is to send volunteers to any corner of the globe in order that they may spend as much as a year volunteering with our partner organisations in order to counter child poverty in that region. This is a really exciting project that we really hope loads of DFs can get involved in and perhaps we even dream that it becomes a legacy of being a DF that no longer do a gap year as such with an organisation that requires you to raise hundreds if not thousands of pounds, but instead you spend a year abroad working full-time as an international woodie sound good? Watch this space I shared the experiences of the Woodcraft and DF shared campaign A Right to Refuge which was warmly welcomed by other members of IFM. In the coming year we shall look to see hopefully this campaign tying in nicely with an international campaign on stopping racist visa application processes that lead to many delegations from outside of Europe failing to attend international camps (such as CoCamp). The UK Border Agency, as all border agencies, need fairer, more accountable and above all less fascist and racist border controls and we should seek to have DFs at the centre of this campaign as it moves forward in the coming year. The Bridges Project, the DF partner project with our Palestinian comrades, got a mention too at the conference. A proposal was brought by the Palestinian Independence Youth Union to remove from the IFM an Israeli organisation that currently owns a settlement in the Jordan Valley. For those who dont know, Israeli settlements involve the destruction of Palestinian property, houses, crops etc so that Israelis can live in Palestine making peace between the two nations more and more difficult. Woodcraft Folk, having a clear line of solidarity with our Palestinian comrades as led by DFs through our project, supported IYU in their request. We managed to achieve a suspension of membership the organisation will have to move from their settlement if they want to rejoin IFM.

The IC meeting was a fabulous experience, but thats mainly because IFM is a fabulous organisation. DFs often get involved in many international events particularly the annual set of seminars are run by our German comrades at their educational centre in Berlin. These seminars are amazing experiences. A few weeks ago one of their centres in Berlin suffered an arson attack from right-wing extremists. It was a sad reminder that across the world our comrades are in constant struggle against fascism and that struggle often leads to sacrifice. I left the IFM IC meeting feeling inspired to continue the International work of Woodcraft, inspired by the stories of others but also the pleasure of describing the work that DFs and Woodcraft members are already doing.

Venturer Committee came into existence last summer during several wet workshops at Venturer Camp 2010, but now its getting up and running with loads of exciting things happening at CoCamp! The biggest Venturer Meeting ever is happening on Thursday 4th from 2PM till 5PM and it is going to be the first opportunity for Venturers to have their say on how they want their Venturer Movement to run. Theres going to be ways to submit your ideas for the Meeting in your town libraries and then the meetings going to be one giant open space discussion using all of your ideas to shape Venturers! CoCamp is also your chance to be part of

Venturer Committee. If you think that this sounds like something for you, come along to the workshops to nominate yourself. Elections are going to take place during the Venturer Meeting. On the new committee, every region is going to be represented by at least one person! All Venturers are going to be able to vote, so come along and vote for who you want to represent you on Thursday afternoon! Venturer Committee have just started a campaign about police brutality in custody. If you want to find out more about it and learn about what rights you have if you are arrested, come to one of our workshops. But were not just doing activities for Venturers if youre a Pioneer and want to find out a bit more about what its like being a Venturer, why not come along to the workshop were running. Calling all co-operatively minded Elfins and Pioneers! Do you want to set up and run your own co-operative business on camp? Collect your Co-op in a Box and youll have everything you need to get started. In the box youll find a poster to chart your progress in setting up and running your co-operative and a set of activities to help you on your way. You will learn about how co-ops do business in the real world putting their values into practice by caring for the environment and people they do business with. There are boxes for budding chefs, farmers, craft workers, health and beauty types, and techies. The box will contain all the essential ingredients to make a product, or provide a service, which other people on camp will want to buy. For example, just think how many people will appreciate a mobile phone charging service, or a bag of popcorn at the film night. Face painting, hair braiding, beads, friendship bracelets, candle holders, wind

chimes. Rocky road crispy buns, cocktails, iced biscuits Cress and bean sprout farms Foot massage, scented lip balm, and soothing bath crystals (for that delicious bath when you get back from camp). These are just some of the Co-ops in a Box on offer. The boxes have been put together specially for CoCamp by the Co-operative College. They will provide a whole week of activity for groups of Elfins and Pioneers and should generate a real buzz of co-operative enterprise around the cam. Weve got two boxes for each village which can be collected from the Co-opville gazebo in Silver Birch town centre from 10am on Sunday morning.

Not only is it a unique experience, it also makes your feet feel as smooth as silk! UK Border Agency. Apartheid ended, apparently. We know that this is not the case, as Israel continues to occupy and oppress Palestinians day in, day out. Apartheid exists closer to home too. When I, a white, young, unmarried man with my British passport can travel where I please without the close scrutiny of my finances, my marital status, what Im going to do, where Im going, who Im going with, whether or not I plan to return home again; and yet application after application from coloured, single, young, men (and women but predominantly men) gets rejected, the curtains shielding our eyes from continued apartheid begin to draw. cannot. The profiling used by the UKBA to decide who should be the haves and who are the have nots is a process that simply is racist and xenophobic. Countering that institution and reasserting the human right to go where one pleases, is a struggle that has been taken up by musicians, actors and other performers refused their visas to share their skills and talents. It is a struggle that has been taken up by trade unions when political activists are detained in Britain for being considered threats. I am delighted to also say, that this is a struggle being taken up, not only by Woodcraft Folk, but by youth movements across Europe. Let us use CoCamp to construct an alternative vision. Let us use our international CoCamp to construct an alternative vision where borders no longer exist, where we are people rather than catalogued individuals and where we are allrespected for being human.

Yet, as we set up our tents, marquees and stages, I cant help but feel I must bring to your attention how much of a struggle it has been to produce as diverse a spectrum of participants for this camp as we have managed.
