10. A student prepares a solution of ethanol as shown below.

(a) (i) What name is given to this process by which sugars are

flask. Explain why this may not be a good idea. [2]

(b) The gas bubbles out through the indicator solution turning it
from green (pH7) to orange (pH4). What does the colour
change tell you about the nature of the gas? [1]

(c) The water in the test tube acts as an airlock which prevents air
from entering the flask. Why is it necessary to prevent air from
entering the flask? [2]

(d) When the reaction has stopped the insoluble yeast is removed.

the yeast and collect the solution of ethanol. [3]
(ii) Explain why it is possible to separate ethanol from the
solution by distillation. [2]

(iv) Give one metal that will not react with steam. [1]

(b) (i) Write an equation for the reaction of magnesium with


steam, including state symbols. [2]

(ii) Calculate the maximum volume of hydrogen produced


(measured at room temperature and pressure) when 4.8g
of magnesium is heated in steam. [3]
