Bio:
Hailed as a “Sax Phenom” by the New York Daily News, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown is
a renowned saxophonist and one of the first prominent jazz musicians to emerge
from the millennial generation. He is currently a member of the GRAMMY winning
Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and he has made numerous internationally televised
appearances with pop icon, Taylor Swift. Chad has toured throughout the globe as
a soloist and international recording artist, prompting critical acclaim for his
musicianship and virtuosity. DownBeat Magazine selected his latest release
“Onward,” which featured jazz legend Randy Brecker, as an Editor’s Pick for 2017,
commending his "technical abilities that mask the difficulty of his wondrously
intricate lines." Chad currently resides in New York, and is on faculty at the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music as a visiting artist.
Workshop Topics:
Chad will workshop the role of soloists and accompanists in a jazz group, delving
into techniques and concepts that one can practice to develop their skills as a
musician in each role. Chad will advise individual players on how they can each
improve, and demonstrate exercises that they can practice to help with their
development as improvisers. Chad also uses fun “improv games” that will
challenge each musician and create immediate results in the improvement of their
group performance.
Technique Development and Concepts:
(for music students)
Chad will discuss numerous technical concepts including how to improvise with
pentatonics, hexatonics, melodic cells and triads. Chad will analyze and play
through a variety of exercises that will help students develop their technical facility
and greater understanding of extended techniques in jazz theory. Chad will
provide visuals using a variety of self-written PDFs that cover these topics, in
order to thoroughly analyze and workshop each concept.
In this informative and interactive workshop, Chad gives a musical summary of the
history and styles of jazz from the swing era through the contemporary era, going
in depth on sub-genres of jazz like “bebop” and “fusion.” Chad will explain
everything from the theory and musical approach to each jazz style, to the
historical and cultural significance that contributed to the creation of each jazz
style.
Chad will explain the art of jazz and improvisation in an interactive approach that
non-musicians can understand. Chad draws musical comparisons to language
and life, and even helps non-musicians learn how to improvise using vocal
techniques that anyone can try with Chad’s guidance. Chad helps non-musicians
understand the value of emotional intelligence and how one can develop
emotional intelligence themselves through their appreciation for jazz and
improvisation. Chad will explain the cultural significance of jazz and how it still has
a profound effect on the world today.
