1.0 INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT
In partial fulfillment of the requirement for the award of
Bachelor of Science to students of the Department of
Architecture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, practical
experiences were improvised for students to discover the working
environment. Students of 300 level are required by the Federal
Government through its parastatal- Industrial Training Fund (ITF)
to gain work experience for the period of six (6) months. This
report gives the summary of the works experienced during the six
(6) months of training period in Interface Projects ltd, from 19th
July, 2021 to 17th December 2021. The report consists of all the
technicalities practiced in the firm I attended.

1.1 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS INDUSTRIAL

WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES)
In the earlier stage of science and technology education in
Nigeria, students were graduating from their respective
institutions without any technical knowledge or working experience.
It was in this view that students undergoing science and
technology related courses were mandated for students in
different institution in view of widening their horizons so as to
enable them have technical knowledge or working experience
before graduating from their various institutions. The Student
Industrial Work Experience Scheme {SIWES} was established in
1973/1974 session. Prior to the establishment of the scheme,
there was a growing concern among our industrialists that

graduates of our institutions of higher learning lacked adequate
practical background studies preparatory for employment in the
industries. Consequently, the scheme affords students the
opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed
experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually
not available in their {Information and Guideline for SIWES 2002} .

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The primary aim of SIWES is to prepare student for their
industrial work situation after graduation. SIWES provides avenue
for students to acquire industrial skills and experience in their
approved course of study. The objectives of the Students
industrial work experience scheme are;

* Provision of avenue for students in the Nigerian

Universities to gain industrial skills and experience in their course
of study.

* To prepare students for the work situation they are likely

to meet after graduation.  To expose students to work methods
and techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not
be available in the universities.

* To make the transition from the university to the world of

world of work easier, and thus enhance students contacts for later
job placement.

 * To provide students with an opportunity to apply their
theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the
gap between university and actual practice.
1.3 CONTRIBUTION OF THE SCHEME
The scheme is making a tremendous impact in the economic
and technological development of the country especially on human
recourses development. An elaborated summary of some of the
contributions of the scheme are as follows:

* It offers the students an opportunity to associate

themselves with workers at various levels in the industries.

* It has contributed to the improved quality of skilled

manpower in Nigeria.  It prepares the students so that they can
fit into employments in the industries.  It creates more
relationships between institutions and industries.

* It assures the institutions that the quality of students

produced by them are to standard after going through the SIWES
program as it forms part of the assessment of the award of
certificates and degrees.

* It affords an opportunity for students to critically examine

themselves for the future challenges in the field.

PROJECTS LTD
Executive Summary
Interface Projects ltd is a registered and licensed architectural
services firm that will be based in Abuja Nigeria. This firm will
handle all aspect of architectural design related services, such as
planning and designing of various types of buildings, from
residential, institutional, industrial, recreational and commercial
projects including landscape and interior design

We are aware that to run a standard architectural services firm,

we will require well trained certified Architects with the
necessary tools and equipment.

We will be a client-focused result driven architectural services

firm that will provide brand-based services at an affordable fee.

We will offer standard and professional design services to all our

clients. We will also ensure that client’s satisfaction is our top
priority.

 Our client’s best interest will always come first and we will be
guided by our values and professional ethics.

Sustainability in terms of design and continuous training and

development will be our main focus in order to bridge the gap in
training and practice of architects.

Our vision is to build an Architectural services brand that will

corporate clients in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. Our
vision reflects on values, integrity, service, excellence and

Our mission is to position our Architectural services firm to

become a household name, a leading brand in the architectural
services industry in the whole of Abuja the federal capital
territory of Nigeria and the first 10 Architectural firm in
Nigeria within the first few years of operations.

These will include the principal architect, and four other
specialized architects in planning design, landscape, construction,
interior design and interns.

3.1 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES

My industrial training began on Thursday 15 th July 2021 at
Interface projects ltd. I was asked to show any of my software
designs in order to be accessed initially, I had a four-bedroom
bungalow design at the time and my supervisor went through the
design and found I needed more experience on my working
drawings and 3D.

 Afterwards I was assigned a workstation with a system for
my drawings. On Monday 19th July I received a brief to design a
four-bedroom bungalow on a certain site. The requirements were
working drawings and one 3D view.

I was also opportuned to visit some construction sites and

completed projects during my stay at Interface Projects ltd which
were:

*Construction of Residential Apartment at Asokoro, Abuja.

*Residential Apartment at Wuye, Abuja.

*Construction of a shopping complex at Gwarimpa, Abuja.

I was opportuned to have both office and site experience at

Interface Projects ltd, which include Software Designs (Plans, 2Ds
and 3Ds using Auto Desk Revit, Sketch-Up, and V-ray).

3.2 OFFICE WORKS

During the period of this training, I was opportuned to gain
experience and learn software designs both 2Ds and 3Ds using
different software, which include; Auto-Desk Revit, Auto-Desk
AutoCAD, Sketch-Up and V-Ray. Here are some of these designs;

3.3 SITEWORK EXPERIENCE

Besides office work I was able to visit some sites during my
SIWES at Interface Projects ltd. I was assigned to the site for a
period of two weeks from 6th October-21st October. During the
first week setting out was carried out. Digging of trenches were
also done as well as demolition of existing substructure. In the
second week arranging of reinforcement bars and formwork for
the column base was done. Soon after the column base was cast.

SETTING OUT

 Setting out refers to the process of bringing down drawings from
paper to the ground in scale 1:1. The method used in site was
manual method of setting out using tape, lines, square, pegs etc.
The steps involved include;

*Establishment of baseline.

*A setback of 3.0m was taken at the back of the site fence.

*An offset of 1.5m was taken from left and right side of site
fence.

*Each time an offset or setback is taken, a peg is placed to mark

the point.

*The overall building outline was measured with tape and marked
with pegs.

* The positions of walls were measured and marked with pegs.

* Lines were pulled along the width of the foundation trenches.

* Diggers were used to mark the position and width of trenches on

the top soil.

Generally speaking, ground conditions are divided between two
types of soil: vegetable soil or topsoil and subsoil. Over much of
the world’s land surface vegetation grows, and the layer of soil in
which it grows is what we refer to as topsoil. Although the basic
‘ingredients’ of topsoil are mineral in origin, it contains a very high
proportion of organic matter as well as bacteria, insects and other
creatures such as worms.

 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, as a student of architecture, I have been able to
obtain the most relevant and effective practical industrial training
experience in a duration of six months {6months} having been
exposed to practical onsite situations and activities and office
works such as using computer-based software in design. Also, an
awareness of the Architectural workplace has been developed in
me and I have acquired important behavior and interpersonal skills
with the opportunity giving to me to get a feel of the work
environment and exposure as a student to the Architects
responsibilities and ethics. My training at Interface Projects ltd
has given me a broader view to the importance and relevance of
architecture in the immediate society and the world as a whole, as
I now look forward to impacting it positively after graduation.

 RECOMMENDATION
*Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) should also conduct
supervision for students of architecture to guarantee that the
student is learning the proper thing according to the profession so
they can be useful for the nation.

*Both Government and private firms should be willing to accept

students on SIWES and help them financially no matter how little.

* The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) should conduct visits on

students on SIWES at their respective firms/organizations.

*SIWES should be conducted in one year and also the option of

undergoing it at two different places with different structures as
more added experience.
