Introduction

Normally fan & blowers are common system which

is used for various processes in various
industries like textile, foundries, chemical
industries, refineries, plastic industries,
pharmaceutical industries and many more.

Generally in such application the motor is operated

direct on 3Ø supply and air is controlled by
opening & closing a damper, mechanical
arrangement mounted on blower shown in the
figure.
This is the basic cycle in which the motor runs in
loading-unloading conditions.

Now when the motor comes in loading condition from

unloading condition, there is a high current impact on
the 3Ø line, because the motor gets run direct at 50Hz /
440V AC supply by DOL or star/delta starter and there is
no arrangement for smooth start (soft start) for the
motor.
This condition creates some disadvantages :-
 Poor energy saving
 Reduced power factor
 Reduce the motor life
 No electronics protections for the motor like Over

voltage, Over load, Over current, Over heat,

Phase losses etc..
What is the solution?
AC DRIVE
a perfect solution in
Compressor application for
ENERGY SAVING purpose
In Compressor system with an AC Drive, we can use a
pressure transducer in place of pressure switch. The
motor is operated in PID mode by an AC Drive with the
feedback of pressure transducer and maintain the set
pressure.
When the pressure of the air chamber is very less, the
drive runs at its maximum speed and develops the
required pressure. And after having set pressure, the
drive decreases the frequency as per pressure analog
feedback.
With using of AC drive there is no high current impact on
3Ø line because of smooth start & stop.

Because of these all conditions user has lots of benefits

 Lowest energy consumption

 Lower starting torque

 Lower starting current

 Higher input power factor

 Lower harmonic impact with in built DC choke

 Lower investment in power system

 Lower & constant power output

 Up to 25% energy saving can be expected

 Constant pressure output

Some special features
Flying Start function

When the AC drive starts into a running motor, it may cause

an over current on the drive and may damage the motor.
Using speed search upon start-up will allow the drive to
slowly find the motor speed, smoothly take control of the
motor, and bring it to command speed.

Frequency Start frequency options

 Begin search from Master Frequency Command

 Begin search from Maximum Frequency
Auto Energy Saving function
When the Auto energy saving function is enabled, the
drive will operate with full voltage during acceleration and
deceleration. At constant speed the AC drive will calculate
the Optimal Output Voltage for the load. When this function
is activated, the maximum output voltage is about 75% of
the normal output voltage after one or two minutes. It is
possible for the output voltage to be 25% below Maximum
Output during auto energy saving operation.

*Note: - This function should not be used with variable loads

or continuous rated output loads. During these types of
conditions, the operation will cycle on and off, giving poor
energy saving results. So you have to check that your load
must be lower than full rated current of the drive and must
be stable.
PID Function

In PID mode the motor runs according to the feedback

from pressure transducer to the drive i.e. you set 5 bar
pressure (your set point) by the drive. When the pressure
fully builds up, the drive automatically decreases the speed
of the motor & if pressure goes down the drive
automatically increases the speed of your motor to achieve
the set pressure. In short the drive maintain your set
pressure automatically.

Auto Voltage Regulation Function

(AVR)
This parameter determines the function of Automatic
Voltage Regulation is enabled or disabled.
When AVR function is disabled, AC drive will calculate input
voltage by DC Bus value (620VDC). Output voltage will vary
by DC Bus varying and may cause output current
insufficiently, over current or oscillation.
When AVR function is enabled, AC drive will calculate output
voltage by actual voltage value of DC Bus. Output voltage
won’t vary by DC Bus varying. This parameter is set to 02:
AC drive will disable AVR function during decelerate to stop.
It can speed up braking in some degree.

Note:- Set-point setting through Pr. 02-00 ( In Example Keypad )

Feedback setting through Pr. 10-00 ( In Example 4~20mA )
Set-Point setting:
In this Application the Drive uses an ACI PID feedback signal
and maintains Air pressure based on a Set-point in the drive.

First relate the pressure transducer range to the drives 0-50Hz as follows:

30psi = 20mA = 50.0Hz

22.5psi = 16mA = 37.5Hz
15Psi = 12mA = 25.0Hz
7.5psi = 8mA = 12.5Hz
0psi = 4mA = 00.0Hz

In the example above if the system needed to maintain 15psi

then, the frequency Set-point on the drive would be 25.0H.

A 12mA signal would keep the drive running at a steady state.

Any other signal back from the transducer would then increase or
decrease the speed of the drive to maintain 15psi.
