A total of eight (8) fireworks-related injuries were reported for the surveillance period from December
21, 2022 to January 6, 2023. A bi-modal peak in injury cases was shown during the period. A small
peak on December 25, 2022 and a sharp peak on December 31, 2022 was observed. (Figure 1)

During the period, blast or burn injuries not requiring amputation accounted for 7 (87.5%). Amputation
was required for 1 (12.5%) of the injuries while no eye injury has been reported. Ignition of illegal
fireworks accounted for 4 (50%) of injuries. (Table 1).

All of the victims were males aged 5 to 25 years old. Children aged 5-9 years old (37.5%) and 10-14
years old (37.5%) accounted for most of the cases. The majority of injuries were sustained by firework
igniters (75%) (Table 2).

in total (7 cases had one anatomical site and 1 case had two sites).
The most common anatomic sites of injury were hands (7, 77.8%), head (1,11.1%) and legs (1,
11.1%) (Figure 2).

Recommendation
Public awareness campaigns should target preventing the use of illegal fireworks since they account
for the majority of fireworks-related injury cases and severe injuries requiring amputation. Law
enforcement efforts should be directed toward eliminating importation, distribution and use of illegal
fireworks.
