Topic 2 - Nursery Structure

The document discusses factors to consider when selecting a nursery site and designing the nursery layout. Key factors for site selection include economic and physical considerations. Important nursery structures include offices, storage buildings, propagation houses, planting houses, and hardening-off areas. Planting house design requires considering orientation, shading, building materials, irrigation systems, and plant arrangement. Ongoing nursery management involves field management like weeding and repairs, as well as plant management such as irrigation, fertilizing, pruning, staking, and pest and disease control.

NURSERY SITE

ORGANIZATION
TOPIC 2:
SITE SELECTION

NURSERY LAYOUT AND DESIGN

NURSERY PARTS AND STRUCTURE

Nursery planning and
selection
Selection of the site is a priority in nursery development.

Location has a major effect on the overall success of

the organisation.

Two (2 ) factors influencing site selection:

i. Economic factors

ii. Physical factors

Economic factors
i. Location

A location must be within the proximity to customers

(for retail nursery) but for wholesale nursery it must
be outskirts of town where land considerably less
expensive.

Location must also within the proximity to resources

such as fertilizer, soil and road.

Location need to close to other nursery, so it will easy

to get the plants which –is not available in the nursery
Economic factors (Cont..)
ii. Infrastructure availability

Basic infrastructure must be available in the

nursery such as roads, electricity, telephone lines,
etc.

If the resources such as clean water from the river,

well, lake or pond available on the site it will save
the cost of nursery.
Physical factors
i. Land surface (Topography)

Level (flat) and well drained area are suitable because:

- Easy to move from one area to another

- Good drainage and irrigation (reduce risk of

flooding)

- Easy to install nursery infrastructure (store,

propagation house and office)
Physical factors (cont.)
ii. Free from hurricane and storm

-Nursery must be protected from high winds because it

will damage the structure and building

High winds can desiccate plant material

iii. Away from sources of pollution

Industrial and automotive pollution can negatively

affect plants, especially young seedlings
IMPORTANT STRUCTURES AND NURSERY
DESIGN
a. Office or marketing site

b. Chemical store, equipment store and garage

c. Medium and preparation site

d. Propagation house

e. Planting house

f. Hardening off site

a. Office or marketing site:
·
Office building should have the marketing site
that is for the selling and buying activities.

Location must be strategic.

b. Chemical store, equipment store and garage:

Chemicals and equipments must be kept

separately.
·
Away from public.

·
The garage should be build for the lorries,
tractors and all the machineries
·.
c. Medium and potting preparation site:

The roof structured building to keep and

prepare the potting medium
·
Consist of rectangular concrete structure to
keep media

The media then put into the polybags or pots

in the same site

d. Propagation house:

Should have 80% shade

Should be equipped with mist which place

on the roof, seedling and rooting box
e. Planting house:

To keep the plants which are not

resistant to sunlight.

Planting house is one of the most

important structure of nursery

2 basic types of planting house:

i. Lath house

ii. Plastic shade

Planting house:
Lath house types

Factors to consider when
building a planting house
1. Orientation

Should be oriented to north and south wind

Orientation allow sunlight to reach plant evenly

2. Shading percentage

Shade depend on plant

Normal shading percentages are 25% , 50% and 75% of

shade.
Norhanani, A.

Shading percentages are 25%, 50% and 75%

Factors to consider when building a
planting house
3. Building material

Should be resistant to
the sunlight, rain and
long lasting.

Can use wood or rod

iron

4. Irrigation system

Methods of watering
can, hose pipe,
sprinkler, drip

5. Plants arrangement
iii. in planting house will affect:

i. The number of plants that can be placed in the

planting house

ii. The efficiency of handling and moving in that area

iii. The shape of the planting house (normally rectangular)

iv. The rows are arrange at 6 pots and spacing between

rows is at 0.5m
Plants that were arrange in the planting house
6. Hardening off site :

- The floor of this area are cemented or spread with

the gravel.

- Used to prepare the plants to harden and resistant

to the site area (field environmental stress).

- Also used for the ornamental plants which like the

sunlight.

MANAGEMENT OF NURSERY

1. Field /site management 2. Plants management

- Weeding - Irrigation

- Clearing the rubbish and - Manuring /fertilizing

debris - Pruning
- Drain clearing - Staking
- Repairing the structure - Disease and pest control
Field/site management

a. Weeding

b. Clearing the rubbish and debris

c. Drain clearing

d. Repairing the structure

a. Weeding

- To prevent the seeds of unwanted

weed from growing in the pots or
polybags

- Can be done either manually or by

using herbicide

- When spraying herbicides make sure

that the spraying drips is not in
contact with the plant

b. Clearing the rubbish and debris

- Can divided into plant or non-plant

debris

- Must be collected or destroyed in

order to avoid pests and diseases
c. Drain clearing

- The clog drain by soil and leaves

will flooded the nursery during
the rainy day

- Must be done regularly

d. Repairing the structure

- The mold surface must be cleaned

up and the parts which attacked by
termites must be replaced

- The irrigation systems must be

repaired from time to time.
Norhanani, A.
Repairing the structure
Plants management

a) Irrigation

b) Manuring /fertilising

c) Pruning

d) Staking

e) Disease and pest control

a) Irrigation

- To replace the water which is lost

through transpiration and to make
sure that the concentration of salts
(fertilizers) in the medium is not
too high

- Depend on factors such as

temperature, relative humidity,
light, size and plant species

- A few methods such as manual

irrigation, sprinkler, drip irrigation
and capillary action
Drip irrigation
This irrigation need water pump, PVC
pipe and drip nozzle

Water from main source was pumped to

the distributed pipe then to rubber tube
with nozzle drip (located in each pot)

Very efficient methods

- +ve:

• water was utilize without any

lossesWater reach medium directly

• Leaves are not wet thus can

reduce the disease

• Water can be controlled

- - ve:
• nozzle need to be check
regularly
Capillary Irrigation System
Used medium capillary characteristics

Water will absorbed up through the spaces

between particles of the medium

Need the tub of water with the spongy materials

Plant container placed on the spongy materials

and the tub will filled with water

Medium will absorbed water until wet

- + ve:

• Inexpensive

• Easy

• Reduce loss of water

• Reduce salt accumulation in the medium

- - ve:

• Need the flat tub and a good absorbing

medium
b) Manuring/fertilising

- Depends on types of medium used, types of plant

and the time period of plant in the nursery

- Commonly used fertilisers are in powder, granular

and water soluble forms

Powder fertiliser Granular

Norhanani, A. fertiliser Water Soluble fertiliser
Organic Fertiliser Straight Fertiliser Foliar Fertiliser
c) Pruning

- To control the size and shape of the plants

- The herbaceous and non-woody plants will be pinching

off to stimulate the development of new buds

- The woody plants will be pruned by using shear

Norhanani, A.

Pinching off Pruning

d) Staking

- To support the plant from fell down when blown by

the wind.

- To support and to get the plant more straight and

attractive

- The stake is removed when the tree is strong enough.

Norhanani, A.
e) Disease and pest control

- Due to the large number of plant species, fertilisers

and irrigation

- Fungicides application can be corporate with the

irrigation system and fertilising system

- Can be done by symptomatic that is control when

the sign of destruction occur

- Must be in proper way and regulation and follow

the safety methods
