The EDSA revolution also known as People Power revolution happened during the

time of Marcos dictatorships in the year of 1986. for starters i would like to give an

explanation to what People Power Revolution is. People power revolution was a string of

citizen protests that took place in the Philippines from February 22 to February 25, primarily

in Metro Manila. There was a persistent civic resistance movement against electoral and

regime violence. Ferdinand Marcos' 20-year tyranny came to an end as a result of the

nonviolent revolution, and democracy was reinstated in the Philippines. People Power

Revolution (2003, August, 4). In wikipedia.URL. Day after day the people increased in

numbers increasing their power to protest, as a result of it led to Marcos' defeat and the

abolition of the tyrannical throne, thus, i would say that i agree that the social movement

caused by the people who wants their freedom back is successful because the people

successfully restored our democratic institution and ushered in political, social and economic

reforms in the country.

At two million people assembled in this Quirino Grandstand at Luneta stadium,

manilla to dissent this declaration of Marcos and Tolentino as victors of this Feb 7 grab

Elections. Party leader and UNIDO presidential candidate Corazon Aquino called for

nationwide civil disobedience and a boycott of all Marcos crony-owned companies in protest

of the proclamation, “The power of the people is much stronger than the people in

power.”(Ghonim, 1980).

According to popular opinion, EDSA People Power was a significant turning point in

Philippine political history since it opened the ground for the return of democracy after more

than ten years under Marcos' dictatorial rule, hoping that now that the dictatorial leader has

been removed, things would improve. Despite the well publicised advancements in national

Philippines, per capita income remains low in comparison to nations like Thailand and
Malaysia and is only marginally better than Indonesia within the area in terms of economic

performance, particularly between 1992 and 1997. Independent studies also show that

improvements in the national economy over the past 60 years have mostly benefited the

wealthy and not considerably benefitted the poorer Filipinos. Research Paper. People Power

Revolution. (2016, Apr 05).

Lessons from 1986 and other potential turning points earlier in Philippine history are

rather clear-cut. At best, revolts have the potential to be revolutionary but do not always

result in them. The 1986 Revolution failed to realise its potential.

Although Marcos was removed from power as a political leader, the political order

that gave rise to him was not completely destroyed and might even be resurrecting right now.

Democratic advocates have long assumed the EDSA's final lesson, despite there haven't been

many instances to support it. Self-interested elites cannot start or maintain a democratic

revolution. An enduring democracy can only be successfully established and maintained by

an informed, self-serving populace.
