2. TOPIC DEVELOPMENT: Landforms of the Inter-Andean Region

The Andes mountains

• The Andes cross the country from north
to south.
• They pass through 11 provinces and are
divided into the Western range and the
Royal Eastern range.
• There is also a small additional branch
known as the Third range or Eastern
branch located in the Amazon region.

UEI 2
• A valley is flat land between mountains.
•If you look closely at the Western range and the Royal Eastern
range, you will see that between them both there are many
valleys. Together, these valleys are known as the Inter-Andean
alley. Can you identify the lines formed by mountains that link
the two ranges? These lines, that look like steps, are the knots.
How were these formed?
•Over millions of years the two main mountain chains of the
Inter-Andean alley were eroded. All the rocks and soil that were
eroded gradually formed sediments in the surrounding areas.
•Added to these sediments was material ejected from volcanoes.
Where these materials accumulated, they formed the elevations
or knots that connect the two mountain ranges.
• Hoyas
•The knots divided the Inter-Andean alley into various small
regions known as hoyas. Hoyas are therefore the areas of lower
altitude surrounded by mountains and knots. They are river
valleys generally known by the name of the river that flows
along them.

The majority of Ecuador's rivers are born in the

Inter-Andean region.

Process
•They originate from the melting ice of the snowy peaks of the
Andes and are fed by rainwater.
•While flowing through this region, they are rocky and torrential
and therefore not navigable.
•Afterwards, they head for the Pacific ocean or the Amazon river.
•The main rivers of the Inter-Andean region belonging to the
Pacific ocean watershed are Guayllabamba, Chimbo, Chanchán,
Cañar, and Jubones.
•The most important ones belonging to the Amazon watershed
are Cutuchi, Patate, Paute and Nangaritza.

UEI 3
Glacial systems
• These are found in the highest mountains of the Andes. They are snowcapped with ice. The
melting ice gives birth to streams which form the rivers that flow down into the valleys. These
waters are important for human consumption as well as for agricultural and industrial uses.

Lake systems
• These are made up of many lakes of different shapes and sizes. They provide our country
with an important economic and tourist resource due to the their natural beauty and the
recreational facilities they provide.
• Imbabura province has beautiful lakes such as San Pablo, Cuicocha, and Yahuarcocha. Notable
in the other Andean provinces are Yambo, Quilotoa, Ozogoche, Culebrillas and more than 150
lakes in El Cajas.
