LEARNING EPISODE 4 (MATCHING PROBLEMATIC
LEARNING ACTIONS AS SOLUTION)
MARIEL JOY S. ANGELES
BSED 4TH YEAR

What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled? Make a
statement. Write in the space below.

The problems I identified are:

1. Reading Difficulty
A large number of students have difficulty reading.
2. Connectivity
Poor internet connectivity jeopardizes many students' academic futures.
3. Motivation
A lack of motivation results in no progress.
4. Comprehension
Poor comprehension will result from a lack of concentration while reading.
5. Bullying
Bullying is still prevalent among many students.

How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
reading?
I discovered that the problem is a reading difficulty, so I can have a remedial session to
help my mentor.

MAKE A CHOICE FOR YOUR ACTION.

A. Conduct a remedial lesson.
B. Show video lessons to help enhance reading skills.
C. Make a learning task to develop reading skills.
Suppose you chose letter A. Conduct a remedial lesson. So you have identified the
SOLUTION that matches the PROBLEM which is difficulty in reading.

The problem is: The action is:

Reading Difficulty Conduct a Remedial

in English Session

Can you also choose letter B. Show video lesson as a SOLUTION for the same PROBLEM?
Yes
Explain:
I believe that selecting B, which is to show video lessons as a solution to the same problem,
can also help students improve their reading skills. Furthermore, a video lesson is excellent
strategic intervention material for teaching a student proper pronunciation because they
can read it while hearing how to pronounce the words.

The problem is: The action is:

Reading Difficulty Show Video Lesson

in English

What about letter C as a SOLUTION to the same PROBLEM? Yes Why?

I believe that the final solution, which is to create learning tasks, can improve reading skills
in such a way that it is a viable solution for teachers to implement. Furthermore, teachers
can track students' learning progress, identify which words are difficult for them to read,
and devise the best strategic intervention material.

The problem is: The action is:

Make a Learning Task

Reading Difficulty in
to develop Reading
English
Skills
What have you noticed of the problem identified above? Reading difficulty is a common issue among
students, especially in light of the pandemic. Students' reading development is being hampered as a
result of the crisis that we are currently facing.

Can there be more than one solution to the problem? Yes

Explain
The above-mentioned problem has multiple solutions because relying on a single solution
would not suffice to solve the problem. Remember that there are numerous solutions to
every problem we face. We simply need to investigate and discover these solutions. We
must be creative, flexible, and innovative in order to find multiple solutions to the same
problem. For example, a solution may work in one class but not in another, so it should
always have other options for dealing with problems.

ANALYZE
Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This
scenario might also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She has
forty learners in her class. One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and
invertebrates. She has been repeating the same science lesson for two weeks, yet no
progress was observed. This situation has been bothering Miss Fely.

Can you identify Miss Fely’s problem?

Of course, yes. Miss Fely's problem, as I identified it, is that her students have a poor
understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates. As stated in the preceding scenario, her
students are unable to classify animals using the aforementioned classification of
animals.
Can you find a solution to solve her problem?
Of course, yes.
A. What I can suggest to Miss Fely is to use charts with animal classifications at the top,
which will serve as the heading. The meaning of the two classifications is explained,
as well as some pictures of animals from the vertebrate and invertebrate groups, so
that all students understand the distinction. She could use charts and pictures to
help her students visualize ideas. Furthermore, that method may facilitate her
students' ability to assimilate information and make connections. To summarize,
Miss Fely can help her students understand the distinction between vertebrates and
invertebrates by using a chart.
B. I also recommend that Miss Fely watch a video presentation on vertebrates and
invertebrates. Miss Fely should keep in mind that students learn a lot from what
they see. It will also make her lesson on the subject easier to deliver. I believe that
by showing videos to her fourth-grade students, they will pay more attention to the
material, which they will then process, understand, and remember. Remember that
simply discussing vertebrates and invertebrates will make it difficult for the students
to understand, so it would be ideal if she used a video presentation, as students at
this grade level require a presentation to help them learn.
What solution can solve Miss Fely’s problem?
Among the two solutions I suggested to Miss Fely, I believe the use of video
presentations with content on the topic is the most likely to solve her problem. Because
she works with fourth-grade students, I believe students in that grade level will find
watching videos entertaining, and I am confident that this solution will address Miss
Fely's problem.
How?
By putting the solution into action, that is. She must first choose videos appropriate for
fourth-grade students. She must then ensure that the content does not contain any
violent clips that students should not watch. She must also present the videos to the
class and elaborate on the topic. As a result, she must repeat and emphasize key points
from the lesson at the end of the presentation.
Are they matched with the problem?
Yes, I believe so. Miss Fely's problem is addressed by the solutions I proposed above.
Miss Fely's problem of her students' poor understanding of their topic on vertebrates
and invertebrates is addressed by the solutions provided. Furthermore, because the
proposed solution includes the use of visual and audio-visual materials such as charts
and educational videos, these would aid her in explaining the topic to her students.
Furthermore, this would allow her students to easily assimilate information and make
connections from the materials presented about their topic.

Scenario B:
Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his learners come
from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their guardians who
stand only as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing and shelter.
Can you identify the most probable teaching-learning problem/s in the class of Sir
Ryan?
The most likely teaching-learning issue in Sir Ryan's class would be a lack of parental
assistance, as the majority of his students came from disrupted families, which
immediately reduces time and parenting inputs to their children.
Another issue that may arise is poor attendance and insufficient student motivation, as
students in the disadvantaged urban community are deprived of basic human needs
such as food, clothing, and shelter, which negatively impacts their interest.
Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that you have identified?
Among the issues identified, I believe that holding students and parents accountable for
frequent and unjustified absences is one of the most effective solutions to poor
attendance and low student motivation. He must also implement a strict attendance
policy to address the problem of excessive absences. Sir Ryan must share motivational
quotes, stories, or videos every day before starting the class discussion. These things will
inspire his students to value education and recognize that their current circumstances are
not permanent. He must convince his students that there are many stories of people who
rose from obscurity to become famous and wealthy, and that they, too, can do the same if
they are motivated to study.

REFLECT:
After reading the two scenarios given above, how would identifying problematic
situations and finding solution to these problems help you become a better teacher?
Explain: As a future teacher, you must be observant in order to identify problematic
situations. How? By allowing yourself to pay attention to the details that occur in your surroundings.
Identifying problematic situations in the classroom and developing potential solutions will help me
become a better educator someday by improving my ability to look and observe attentively. Aside
from that, it allows me to develop and comprehend issues that commonly arise in classrooms.

WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS

Using any one example of problems in this activity, answer the AR prompts that follow:

OBSERVE:
What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?
The following problematic situations that can arise in the classroom include connectivity,
involvement, home, and social status, all of which can have an impact on the teaching-
learning process for both teachers and students. Furthermore, based on scenario two, Sir
Ryan's students came from a disadvantaged urban community, with the majority of them
coming from disrupted families. The possibility is that they are unable to focus on every
lesson provided by teacher Ryan, that there are a greater number of drop-outs, that there
are a greater number of absent students, and that they are disinterested in the lessons.

REFLECT:
What changes do you want to achieve?
The first change I want to make is to provide learners with a meaningful teaching and
learning process while also interacting with them socially. Second, I want them to participate
in all activities and realize that there is hope and assistance available to them. Third, I want
them to know and believe that I am willing to do everything in my power to help them
become better versions of themselves and that I will encourage them to be more
cooperative and have a more positive educational experience. Finally, I want them to shift
their mindset and believe in their own ability to make positive changes for their own benefit.
PLAN
What strategies will you use to improve the situation?
To improve the current situation, I plan to visit them at their home on a regular basis in
order to get to know them personally and establish a positive rapport with their parents. I
will schedule a meeting with the parents and form a group called the "Parents-Teacher
Association." As a teacher, I will be adaptable and sensitive. Both parents and students
should be able to express their concerns. To gain their trust, I will position myself as a role
model because I believe that cultivating a positive attitude in the classroom begins with me.
And I will reinforce and reward positive behaviors because praising students for their
positive behavior is a simple yet powerful way to motivate them to do their best. These
strategies will assist students in meeting all of their needs and bringing them to the
classroom. I know it's difficult, but if the teacher and parents are working toward the same
goal and heading in the same direction, it will all be worthwhile in the end.
ACT
What would be the title of your Action Research should you conduct the study?
"Strategic Intervention and Effectiveness towards Social Status of Grade 1 Students" would
be the title.
Add: Solutions / actions
As a teacher, I will conduct this research because I am confident that it will benefit both parents
and students. To be able to conduct this study, I will submit it to the principal for approval and
prepare the necessary materials. As part of the research process, I will seek and secure an in-
kind donation that will enable me to meet some of the students' and parents' needs.

I. Title of Action Research: Learner Support in the Utilization of Self-Learning Module

for TLE Specializations: Effective Tool for Continuous Learning Amidst Pandemic
II. Author/s: Maylen Q. Pedragoza
III. Abstract: This study was conducted to propose a solution to the challenges posited by
modular distance learning to the students and teachers of Technology and Livelihood
Education Specializations of Sta. Ana San Rafael National High School. The huge
challenge includes accessing teaching-learning resources that are usually found in a
classroom setting, inadequate interaction with the teachers or instructors, late receipt of
the study materials, non-familiarity with self-study skills, lack of family support, and
feelings of isolation. To find a remedy to these challenges, the researcher highlights the
importance of Learner Support in the utilization of the Self-Learning Module (SLM) for
TLE Specializations. As a primary tool for intervention, the researcher created a
Facebook page to generalize and synchronized Learner Support services and purposely
back up the TLE subject teachers' FB messenger Group Chat (GC). The aim of the FB page
is to create an avenue for the creative and innovative posting of video tutorials, and
learning references, collaborating with student tasks, stimulating learner motivations,
and continued engagement. Likewise, it become an automatic monitoring tool for
students since FB pages contain unique elements which enable the administrator
activates the message button, create a poll, record insights (comments and reactions),
and automatically count the people reached within a single post. The instruments used
in this study are focus group observations for respondent feelings, reactions, attitudes,
and experiences; interviews to collect data not covered by observations; and descriptive
survey method using a questionnaire checklist to gather pertinent data. Percentage
formulae and weighted mean were utilized to describe the demographic profile and to
weigh every indicator as selected in the variable. Since Facebook is the main application
on which people find interconnection nowadays, positive results are projected such as;
increased motivational level, student engagement, improved satisfaction, retention,
skills development, and lesser drop-out among TLE specializations students. Based on
the results it is recommended to intensify the instrumentation and delivery of Learner
Support in every course to help struggling students succeed.
