(Gepcomm) - To Inform

This document outlines a potential powerpoint presentation on the effects of online learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. It discusses how the pandemic has changed education standards by necessitating alternative learning methods like online classes. It notes that over 28 million students in the Philippines have been affected by school closures. The presentation would analyze some advantages of online learning, like financial benefits and convenience, alongside disadvantages such as unequal internet access and a lack of motivation without in-person classes. It concludes that improving online education requires collective effort until the pandemic ends and more options can be made available to all learners.

Introduction

Hook Question: How much are we learning right now? How about something
more controversial like, are we even learning right now?

A. Short Background (Impact of Covid-19 on education):

As we all know, we are having these online classes right now because the Covid-19
pandemic stipulated new standards or “normals” in our society. Its effects include
normalizing alternative learning delivery modalities - modular, television-based,
radio-based instruction, blended, and online education and the Self-Learning
Modules (SLMs) coined by DepEd - to ensure that basic education will still be
available in the Philippines. Educational institutions and the government still
investigate and explore methods improving education with the pandemic impeding
learning across the Philippines (Department of Education, 2020).
B. Present Statistics of Affected Students in the Philippines School closures
caused by Coronavirus (Covid-19)

Unesco (2020) provides a comprehensive report on the current amount of

learners affected by the pandemic in the Philippines, they estimate up to 28, 451,
212 students affected with school closure implemented country-wide.

Body

With that said, adapting to the new normal has its pros and cons or its advantages
and disadvantages, and so, analyzing them and weighing in their points would allow
us to figure out what we, students, should voice out to improve them.

A. Some Advantages include:

1.) Theoretical Advantages which are advantages that are in theory

or assumption, and not in actuality, or some of the advantages,
given a perfect example -
- These include: Flexible learning arrangements, self-paced
learning, and the promotion of the development of self-
discipline, which means that students are allowed to choose
when or where to work, at the comfort of their own home; they
all have the freedom to work at their own pace that best fits their
learning style; and they have responsibility for their course of
studies, students can develop how to manage their time more
effectively.

2.) Actual Advantages: Online learning is actually beneficial

because of:
- Financial Benefits, lower cost, financial cuts from
transportation, expensive books, school supplies, daily
allowance and more, allow for cheaper educational costs.
Tuition fees for online courses are also cheaper.
- Convenience, prioritizing students safety, new class
systems prioritize students’ safety by limiting the chance
of transmission; Aside from that, imagine having to travel
around Taft at night, with so many hazards such as
having a hard time riding your usual kind of
transportation, such as jeepneys, busses and the lrt, with
having online classes, students are much safer at the
comfort of their homes.
- DepEd, also in pursuit of online classes, have released
minimum requirements for easy accessibility of every
student. DepEd mentioned that "the use of
desktop/laptop is truly sufficient in ensuring a smooth
transfer and consumption of learning".
- Also, online platforms (launched by DepEd) gives access
to online review materials and Open Educational
Resources of students.

B. Disadvantages of online classes are also prevalent, some of those include:

1. Lack of accreditation & quality assurance in online education - since some

materials are checked only by the instructor themselves.
2. Online and modular learning is inaccessible to some - not everyone can afford
to have quality internet access or internet access at all, not everyone can
afford the cost of laptops, especially students from public schools
● In an article on Rappler, a public school teacher stated that among 42
of her students, only 20 expressed their interest in enrolling during this
pandemic because some of the students lacked the necessary
equipment for online classes.
3. Cheating prevention during online assessments is complicated - students
cannot be directly observed during assessment
4. E-Learning requires strong self-motivation and time management skills - none
of the added pressure normally associated with traditional colleges.
One Specific Case:
On April 15, 2020, an article was published by theLasallian regarding issues
with regards to De La Salle University’s - a well-known academic institution in
the Philippines - decision to have online classes. In the words of the President
of DLSU’s the Association of Faculty and Employees (AFED) Inc, Dr.
Contreras, “We cannot give you a one-size-fits-all solution” and “The only
solution to that [issues not everyone being capable of online class] is actually
to enable choice so that everyone can have what they want,”
- “That’s why our answer is really to give choice to students,”
Some issues raised in the article:
- students who lacked stable internet access.
- Online learning might “compromise the quality of education”, especially
for subjects that are difficult to teach. “During these times, the only
mode is online learning…but the ideal is blended learning,”

Conclusion
To conclude, these new systems of Classes are the only available classes in the
Philippines because of the Community Quarantine still strictly imposed by the
government. As mentioned earlier, there is no 1 single answer to every case and
condition of every learner in the Philippines, as was before (even without the
pandemic), what matters is that options for learning are still available. It is up to our
collective effort as students, teachers and institutions to improve it as much as we
can until we are able to exit the pandemic. It is also our responsibility to every citizen
in our society to not waste the opportunity given to us.

How much are we learning right now? How about something more controversial like,
are we even learning right now?

The answer depends on all of us.
