INTRODUCTION
Academic pressure has been part of the student’s life. It could have a

positive outcome, but it negatively affects the student’s social, physical,

cognitive, and physiological health. Those negative effects increase the chances

of students developing disorders such as anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation,

and insomnia. Academic pressure may come from high family expectations,

ambitious goals, influence from friends, or high demands of society.

Students are increasingly stressed about their academic performance in

today's competitive world. Academic performance plays a crucial role in every

student’s life at school. Their performance is what will decide whether they will

be able to take the next stage of their career or not. However, due to this,

students experience a high level of pressure to do well, even more at school.

Academic pressure may lead to stress, which can be the reason why students

will face many more challenges that make it more difficult for them to learn.

The pressure in the classroom can be harmful. This is due to the

possibility that it may result in both psychological and physical problems, both

of which may have a detrimental effect on grades. Academic pressure can cause

stress, worry, despair, low self-esteem, and confidence, among other

undesirable emotions. Academic pressure can originate from a variety of

sources, such as parents, the need to fit in with peers, the more competitive

aspect of getting into a  university, and other elements. The mental health of

students, particularly in terms of academic stress and its effects, has become a
Calaca Academy,
Inc
serious concern among schools and policymakers due to the rise in student

suicides around the world.

The aim of this study is to help students who are directly concerned

about the problems that were brought about by academic pressure.

Understanding the importance of addressing the students' pressure is relevant to

improving their academic performance and allowing them to

achieve their academic goal. It is also crucial to understand how academic

pressure affects other aspects of life, such as family, parenting, and work in the

future. Reducing academic pressure on students can lower the chance of

developing disorders and allow students to balance school, family, and other

responsibilities. This study will serve as an eye-opener for students to consider

these situations and bring them to their attention. Through this study, students

will be aware of the impact of pressure on their health, academic performance,

and daily lives.

Academic pressure has been one of the major causes of stress for

students because of the internal and external expectations placed upon their

shoulders. It can have a positive or negative outcome. Academic pressure is

clustered into three categories such as parenting, social belongingness, and high

demands of society.

Putting so much pressure on yourself to make good grades and

participate in every school activity is not the best high school experience,

(Rogers, 2016). According to her perspective, it only increases the strain and

tension, which makes learning more challenging. She experiences tension, and

the pressure to achieve the highest marks is constant. She hesitated to respond

as she frequently considers what the 4.0 means to her. If she is going through all

this trouble to obtain it, she said it must signify something. She tries her best,

but the stress and strain are making her wonder why. There is a lot of stress

related to the workload and pressure to get excellent marks. She has never found

education to be particularly challenging. The fact that she doesn't frequently

encounter difficulties doesn't make it any simpler; on the contrary, it makes it

more challenging.  Many people don't understand how that is possible. She had

multiple conversations when someone would ask something to the effect of, "If

you are so excellent at school, why don't you like it?" She has heard many

different variants of this question, and they continue to perplex her.

Calaca Academy,

According to Arvinder Kaur (2020), stress can be defined as the

brainless bones to any demand, and that demand may trigger a response like

positive changes, negative changes, or serious illness. Stress happens when you

feel you can't cope with pressure, and it comes in many shapes and forms. Any

event or situation that leads to tension or worry is called stress. It is the process

that occurs in response to situations or events that disrupts or threatens one's

physical or

psychological functioning. All stress is not necessarily negative. To achieve

something, stress is necessary. While academic stress is mental distress

concerning some anticipated frustration associated with academic failure or

even awareness of the possibility of such failure. Academic stress is related to

the pressure of achieving academic goals like assignments, activities,

examinations, and more. However, academic pressure is a component of

academic stress. It is when the student is under heavy demands of time and

energy to meet and achieve the goals.

According to Kritika Sharma (2021), academic pressure basics are

probably normalized nowadays. But they are harmful to mental health and

should be changed. Pressuring students to get high grades where even a passing

grade feels like a stab in the stomach, pressuring students to take honors classes

that aren't right for them can affect their everyday lives. She took the classes

that she is really interested in. She never took the subjects she didn't like

because she knew it would

Calaca Academy,
Inc
make her miserable and had nothing to do with her interests. Making that

decision has done nothing but helped her. Encouraging or glorifying, getting

less sleep, pulling all-nighters, not eating, or not taking care of your body are

non-negotiables and should not be compromised. A student should not have to

face pressure such as threatening things based on grades, getting grounded, or

getting their electronics taken away just because they didn't earn a certain grade.

People are unaware of how bad a student's mental health is. Every student will

have a different vision for what their future looks like, and acceptance rates do

not define them.

As stated by the Pacific Teen Treatment (2022), children nowadays are

encouraged to think ahead and academically prepare themselves for future

academic milestones. This cyclical pattern of continuously anticipating the next

step in academia can be damaging. A young person can feel academic pressure

from outside sources such as the increasingly competitive nature of being

accepted into a university, parents, wanting to fit in with peers, and more. Some

teenagers experience mild academic pressure and are positively motivated by it,

but the reverse is also true. Part of a young person’s maturation process through

adolescence is learning how to balance the demands of life, and academic

pressure can be hindering one's growth and development. There are a variety of

unwanted effects that a young person can develop from academic pressure.

Academic pressure can cause an adolescent to experience negative

emotional symptoms of stress (Pacific Teen Treatment, 2022). Immense

Calaca Academy,
Inc
academic pressure can cause a young person to struggle with an obsession with

grades, anxiety, changes in appetite, sleep difficulties, and extreme

competitiveness. Grade obsession can alter a child’s creativity, as constantly

thinking about what the teacher wants or what the rubric says for a paper injects

a fear of not meeting standards for a good grade. Anxiety disorders can make it

hard for students to get schoolwork done or study. It may affect their

relationships with peers and teachers. In some cases, students with anxiety

disorders miss a lot of school days. Or they may avoid school altogether.

Changes in appetite can also be a cause of academic pressure. Usually, when the

level of stress is moderate or high, then eating habits will lead to eating

unhealthy foods. Another effect of academic pressure is sleep difficulties.

Indeed, empirical studies suggest that emotional and academic stress harm sleep

resulting in fewer hours of sleep, more sleep disturbances, and later rise times,

especially in periods of high stress. Extreme competitiveness is another cause of

academic pressure. Students who are pressured to measure their self-worth by

comparing themselves to others often feel stress, jealousy, and anxiety.

Academic pressure does not always lead to better grades and improved test

scores. Excessive levels of academic stress can result in an increased prevalence

of psychological and physical problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness,

and stress-related disorders, which  can adversely affect academic results.

As stated by the Newsport Institute (2021), Academic pressure on young

adults has reached intense levels. The stress of getting into the right college,

making good grades, and landing the

Calaca Academy,
Inc
best internships, all in preparation for success in the workplace, takes an

enormous toll on young adults' mental health. Too often, academic success

comes at the expense of young adults’ social and emotional development.

Academic pressure may come from family expectations, the ambitious goals

students set for themselves, or the demands placed on them by society at large.

Coaches and school administrators may also push students to succeed. Whatever

the source of academic pressure, the results can be detrimental to well-being on

multiple levels. When young adults feel they must prioritize academic

achievement over everything else, including physical health, positive

relationships with peers and family, creative self-expression, and downtime to

recharge, they pay a high mental health toll. Academic pressure can lead to

depression, anxiety disorders, or high-functioning anxiety.

As stated by the India Today Web Desk (2020), the society today has

high regard for academic excellence. Those who fail to meet up the expectations

often face harsh criticism which creates self-doubts about their abilities and

intelligence. With a cut-throat competitive world out there, Students are

constantly pushed to the edge by their parents to build a bright future and

succeed in life. However, the enormous pressure on the students not only

hinders their growth and learning but leads to increased stress and anxiety. The

future of a child is the biggest concern to a parent. Since the educational

institutes in our country are always on the lookout for the brightest and best

students to maintain their reputation, parents feel compelled to raise the bar too
Calaca Academy,
Inc
high for  their students to match up to the standards. Parents nowadays are too

concerned about how the

world would perceive their students which in turn results in parental pressure.

The idea of excellence and success is often generalized by parents based on how

others are performing. Apart from academics, children are also trapped by rising

expectations in various areas where they have their interests like sports, music,

arts, etc. Hence, without giving care to the wholesome

development of a student, parents keep on pushing the boundaries which

ultimately leads to stress, disappointment, anxiety, and suicide.

According to PubMed Central (2020), pressure imposed by family

members can be the most impactful form of stress on teenagers’ mental health.

Parentals words affects their child’s the most. What they say gives an impact

whether it is positive or negative. When parents speak negatively or criticize

children, they may flip that criticism around and talk poorly to themselves.

They may tell oneself "I'm stupid," or "I'll never accomplish anything well."

This kind of scenarios often leads to depression because of feeling too much

loneliness. Children is always affected of their parents. To students, making

their parents proud are what makes them is the definition of success. But some

people get a hard time getting their parents approval of them in everything they

have accomplished and done.

According to Gerard Keens - Douglas (2018), many parents today put

unnecessary pressure on their children. Because they are using their children as
Calaca Academy,
Inc
means of reliving their childhood fantasies and creating expectations for

children that stop them from celebrating the lives and successes of children

these days. He believes that it is very damaging to children. He believes they are

psychologically destroying these children for the next decade or two because

there is something about celebrating a child's success when it comes to

appreciation. It sends a psychological message such as "I love you" or "I accept

you not for your performance but for who you are." Most kids would not go the

route of suicide or extreme self-destructive behavior at this stage. However,

some may because the pressure to succeed and meet their parents' expectations

can become so overwhelming that they give up. As a result, parents should be

aware that it may result in that type of ultimate end, or it can be dealt with

silently by the child, but the suicide is taking place in the child's mind and life.

They are broken, and even if they do not go as far as drinking, jumping, or

engaging in the ultimate self-destructive behavior, that child is already ruined.

Although a fundamental and important question, the vast majority of

research on friends and achievement is interested in the effect of friends on

achievement, ignoring the question of how individuals became friends in the

first place (Crosnoe, Cavanagh, and Elder 2003; Riegle-Crumb, Farkas, and

Muller 2006). According to this study, people who have friends who are good at

school or who enjoy going to school tend to have fewer academic troubles and

have better academic results than those whose friends are less academically

focused. The objective is to understand the degree to which teenagers seek out
Calaca Academy,
Inc
friends who share their academic success, contributing to a concentration of

high (and poor) academic accomplishment within networks while taking into

consideration the complex interaction between friend selection and friend

influence.

Students rely on a sense of external validation, we rely on someone

else’s opinion or standard, to feel a sense of accomplishment (Cuneo, 2018).

Being judged by the people around you are the last thing that everyone wants to

experience. That is the most common reason why students are pressured in their

studies. Because of it, students became more stress in their studies as they strive

for perfection. The high demands of the society cause negative effects to the

health and academic performance of the students.
