Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Students face a variety of academic challenges, including assignments, projects,

recitations, examinations, quizzes, and many others. Having this level of anxiety may

have an impact on their academic performance. They may lack and are constantly

pushing past their limits to finish and submit it on time because they do not want to

receive a failing grade. Anxiety has almost become a way of life for some students.

However, it is risky to allow it to become a student’s way of life in Senior High School

because some anxiety levels can have disastrous consequences that completely

change students’ lives and may result in failure.

Anxiety is unavoidable, and it causes students to struggle with many academic

problems such as assignments, projects, recitations, tests, quizzes, and so on. This

amount of anxiousness may have an effect on their academic performance. They may

lack focus and are continually pushing past their boundaries to finish and submit it on

time because they do not want to receive a failing mark. Anxiety has almost become a

way of life for some students. However, it is risky to allow anxiety to become a student's

way of life in senior high school because some anxiety levels can have terrible

implications that radically disrupt kids' lives and may result in failure. Anxiety causes

sweating and trembling, as well as a few health problems like sadness, stress, and

rapid breathing. In contrast, anxiety is essential to motivate students to learn. As a

result, in order to lessen the negative features of anxiety that impede/harm students'

learning and performance, students must develop anxiety coping skills. The key to

reducing anxiety is to give students a sense of control over their education, information

about what to expect, and feedback on how they can improve their performance in the

new normal.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of:

a. Grade level

b. Age

c. Gender

2. What is the level of anxiety of GAS students in terms of:

a. Shift from the old to the new normal

b. Subjects

3. What are the factors affecting the anxiety level of GAS learners in the new

normal?

Scope and Delimitation

The aim of our study is to identify the factor affecting students' anxiety

levels in the new normal, as well as the level of anxiety of GAS students in terms of

transitioning from the old to the new normal and their topics.

This study considers every aspect of students’ personal information that

has an impact on their academic performances such as their gender, age, grade level

and subjects. Each of the respondents are given same questionnaires to answer. The

study is delimited only for the current GAS students of Cabatuan National High School.

Limitations of the study

This study will not include any other issues that are not related to anxiety. Other

students who are not grade 11 GAS students are not included in the scope of this

research. The research would be carried out by distributing questionnaires to students

as a survey and reference tool. The researchers' technique will allow them to identify

the factors of anxiety among Grade 11 GAS students.

Figure I present the conceptual framework of the study. It consists of two

variables, factors affecting as an independent variable and anxiety level as the

dependent variable.

In figure I, factor affecting as independent variable pertains to all factor such as

a lack of self-esteem, a lower socioeconomic background of the family and elevated

academic workload are strong predictions of anxiety and stress among students.

Other factors involve academic anxiety which mentioned by Hooda, M., & Saini,

A., (2017) on their study. They discuss that there are four components, worry,

emotionality, task generated interference, and study skills deficits.

Alindao, et.al.’s (2022) said if we are stressed, our adrenaline levels will rise, our

heart rate and breathing will likely speed up, blood will be rerouted to our limbs, and our

body temperature will likely rise as well. The fact that stress and anxiety trigger the

body's fight-or flight response, causing physiological and psychological changes that

improve our capacity to respond to danger when faced with a crisis.

Social acceptance is also an important factor for the socialization of students with

disabilities. On the contrary, not being accepted by their peers decreases the sense of

self-confidence and causes anxious and timid behaviors to increase. Özlü, B., & Serin,

N. B. (2021).

According to Azher, et.al.’s (2014), excessive use of internet makes students

addicted to it and consequently causes anxiety and stress among users. The more one

is addicted to it the more one is psychologically depressed.

Sridevi, K. V. (2013) mention on their study the types of anxiety; Normal versus

Neurotic Anxiety, General Anxiety, Test Anxiety.

Riad (2020) discussed that the outbreak of communicable diseases is widely

perceived as a traumatic event leading to a significant increase in anxiety, depression

and fear levels.

Another variable, anxiety level can be influenced by personality, coping

strategies, life experiences, and gender. Anxiety levels are typically classified by the

level of distress and impairment experienced into four categories: mild anxiety,

moderate anxiety, severe anxiety, and panic level anxiety.

Definitions of Terms
Anxiety - a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event

or something with an uncertain outcome.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Anxiety is a basic human emotion that consists of fear and uncertainty and

usually it occurs when an individual believes that the event is a threat to self or self-

esteem. Anxiety can also be state or trait depending on its durational anxiety block the

normal thought processes. It favors a passive approach to material rather than

interaction with it. Anxiety is a human emotion that everyone experiences. This study is

to determine the sudden need to navigate this ‘new normal’ has compromised the

mental health of many people, coping flexibility, define as the astute deployment of

coping strategies to meet specific situational demands, is proposed as an adaptive

quality during this period of upheaval. The present study investigated the associations

between coping flexibility and two common mental health problem: Covid-19 anxiety

and depression.

The demand on students to do better is significantly exacerbated by

psychological conditions including anxiety, sadness, and stress. Their performance is

hampered by all of the causes, which results in poor academic performance. Few

studies specifically examined student academic achievement and mental health in

Chhattisgash state during the past few decades. This study sought to close that that

gap by determining how academic success is related to stress. (Sharma, 2017)

However, Hooda, M., & Saini, A. (2017) mentioned that a student’s academic

performance may suffer as a result of academic worry. Parents and teachers can learn

to spot the symptoms of anxiety is school children. More serious academic issues

related to anxiety can be presented if instructors and parents assist students in learning

to control their anxiety early on. Overtime, anxiety may grow more harmful. It is

important to understand academic anxiety since early detection of the conditions helps

pupils perform better. This essay goes into great length regarding the elements of

academic anxiety and ways to lessen it.

Alindao, et.al.’s (2022) this study evaluated students` anxiety at a period of

new educational normality. To a certain the significance of the association between the

learner profile and level of anxiety, the data were analyzed using percentage weighted

mean and chi square. In conclusion, research has indicated that improving student-

teacher relationships is necessary to deliver high-quality instruction and avoid the

development of academic anxiety.

Anthony et.al.'s (2021) the "new normal" in higher education can mean

different things on varied campuses. The new normal, which occurred because of the

COVID-19 pandemic, is the current atmosphere across the higher education landscape.

As institutions prepare for the 2021-22 academic year, higher education has entered its

new normal.

The study of Özlü, B., & Serin, N. B. (2021) is to aimed to examine whether

there is a significant difference between the social acceptance levels of the students

with disabilities in the middle school students with normal development according to the

variables of gender, grade level, number of siblings, and income level. This study was

carried out in general screening model with appropriate sampling model.

Selda, Ö. Z. E. R. (2019) the aim of the study is to analyze attitude,

motivation and anxiety levels of students at a state university studying at a faculty of

tourism towards vocational English course. In the study, quantitative research and

survey method were used.

Raja, F. (2017). professionals worldwide struggle due to lack of good public

speaking skills. 75% participants admitted their fear of public speaking and 95% agreed

that if proper counseling, instruction and coaching is provided, this fear can be

overcome. Academic anxiety is a deliberating factor which impact on students’

academic achievement.

According to Vitasari (2010) anxiety is one of the major predictors of

academic performance. Students with anxiety disorder display a passive attitude in their

studies such as back of interest in learning, poor performance. In exams, and on

assignments. A study has found a significant correlation between study anxiety and

academic among engineering students.

The study of Azher, et.al.’s (2014) internet addiction scale (IAS) and beck

anxiety scale were used as assessment tools for data collection. Data was analyzed

using mean, standard duration, t-test and regression analysis. Results showed that

prevalence of internet is more in male students than female students. Regression

analysis showed a positive and significant relation between internet addiction and

anxiety.

Azeem (2018) among the factors that predict academic success academic

anxiety plays a crucial role. Anxiety is a nervous system excitation that cause a person

to feel tense, nervous, and worried. The goal of the current study is to determine the

differences and connections between academic accomplishment and anxiety with

regard to gender and religion/ respectively.

The goal of the current study was to determine the association between

pupils in higher secondary schools’ academic achievement and levels on anxiety.

Teachers who have seen that certain students tend to perform below their best in

circumstances defined by a high degree of stress. It was anticipated that nervous

students would be less likely the less worried pupils to achieve well over all in their

studies. Adolescents in our schools frequently face troubling issues that hinder their

academic success. Sridevi (2013)

Tipon (2021) this study investigates the relationship between self-efficacy

and academic motivation of senior high school students from public school amidst the

new normal of education in the Philippines.

Rana (2010) the major aim of this research study was to explore the

relationship between test anxiety and academic achievement of students at the post

graduate level.

Rao BV, R., & Chaturvedi, A. (2017) academic anxiety is a kind of state

anxiety, which relates to the impending danger from environments of the academic

institutions including teacher, certain subjects like mathematics, English, etc.

However, Riad (2020) the outbreak of communicable diseases increases

community anxiety levels; however it demands protective behavioral changes with

adjacent awareness of the emerging epidemic.

Objective of the study was to analyze the psychological well-being and

anxiety among 153 adolescents selected from 5 higher secondary schools of kevala.

Raphael (2014)

The study of Ablian (2022) explored mathematics anxiety and

mathematics self-efficacy of senior high students in Botolan District of Zambales during

the academic year 2020-2021.

Undergraduate medical education comprises strenuous study and training

for five and half years. Sanjeet (2019)

pandemic, is the current atmosphere across the higher education landscape. As

institutions prepare for the 2021-22 academic year, higher education has entered its

new normal.

The study of Uzun (2020) is aimed to determine the anxiety levels of

students towards Bosnian, their native language, and Turkish, which is a foreign

language. With this aim, two separate scales were used in the study to determine

speech anxiety levels.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter reveals the methods of research to be employed by the researcher

in conducting the study which includes the research design, population of the study,

research instrument and its development establishing its validity and reliability, data

gathering procedures, and the appropriate statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study was made by the means of quantitative methods of researcher. The

researcher attempted to get the answers to the aforementioned problem and to justify

and satisfy the objectives of the study. Likewise, it also attempted to know the different

impact to their lifestyle.

According to SIS International Research (n.d.) quantitative research is a structured

way of collecting and analyzing data obtained from different sources. Quantitative

research involves the computational, statistical, and mathematical tools to derive

results. It is conclusive in its purpose as it tries to quantify the problem and understand

how to prevalent it is by looking for projectable result to a larger population.

Respondent of the Study

The respondent of the study is composed of people in the community of 11 GAS

section year 2022. One of the vital processes to keep this study successful. All of these

participants was conducted where each member of a population has a capability to

become part of the sample.

Research Instrument

The questionnaire was used as the systematic sampling. The instrument to be

prepared focused on answering the statement of the problem. The factors affecting the

anxiety level of GAS students in new normal. The questionnaire contains of fifteen (15)

questions. The questionnaires will be serve to the respondent.

Systematic sampling is a statistical method that researchers use to zero down on

the desired population they want to research. Researches calculate the sampling

interval by dividing the entire population size by the desired sample size. This legend

will help the researchers to analysis the result of conducting systematic sampling.

Data Gathering Procedure

A letter of request to conduct the study was prepared. The researcher

constructed a questionnaire checklist, validated by the teacher of the subject then the

questionnaire check lists are distributed. The researcher conducts the research in 11

GAS students through survey, because of the advantages of the survey method. The

researcher plains to the respondents the importance of their response to the study. The

researcher clarifies some terms to the respondents so that the respondents can answer

the questionnaire with full knowledge of their responsibility as the subject of the study.

The researcher requested the respondents to answer with all honesty. The researcher

uses a Systematic sampling is a probability sampling method in which researchers

select members of the population at a regular interval determined in advance. In this

study since the researcher goal is to determine the factors affecting the anxiety level in

the new normal on 11 GAS, the researcher believes that this method is the most

appropriate in choosing the sample for the research. After the respondents answered

the questionnaire, the researcher collected and tallied the data for interpretation. The

researcher asks a statistician to help in determining the appropriate statistical tools to

be used and interpreting the data. Based on the data the researcher comes up with

conclusion and recommendations for this study.
