    i) Put your cassette in the tape


    deck and select the source on the
    Teacher Control Centre:

    Use the player controls to cue your


    tape:

    (Note: the black arrow must be


    depressed to hear the audio.)

    ii) Launch 'Audacity Audio Editor' from within the


    Desktop 'Resources' Folder.

    (Note: you can also find Audacity under the 'Public –


    MultiMedia' menu on the Windows Taskbar.)

    iii) Here is the Audacity interface.

    Audacity is a powerful open source


    audio editor available for all platforms.

    iv) Go to 'Edit – Preferences'.

    In the Audacity Preferences window,


    click the 'Audio I/O' tab

    Under Channels, select '2(Stereo)'

    Click 'OK' to close the preferences


    dialogue.

    v) Now click the record button

    And start playing your cassette.

    (Note: you can play the cassette either by


    using the Teacher Control Centre or by
    hand.)

    Once the tape starts the waveforms


    will appear along the Audacity
    Spectrogram.

    vi) When the audio has finished


    recording. You can edit your file.

    Use the 'Edit' menu to Delete, Cut,


    Copy and Paste selections of your
    file. You can also insert silences.

    vii) Finally export your clip to a suitable format.

    File – Export As WAV/MP3/Ogg Vorbis

    Notes:
    .MP3 is a compressed format suited to web delivery.
    .WAV is uncompressed but retains all audio data.
    .OGG is an open source alternative to .MP3.

    .mp3 and .ogg files are approximately 10% the size of .wav files
