Dr. Gloria D. Lacson served as President of Mary Johnson College of Nursing from 1970 to 1994, during which time the institution expanded and was granted university status. Under her leadership, nine new academic programs were added, several new buildings were constructed to house these programs and expand facilities, and the Research and Development Office was created. It was a time of significant growth and improvement that led to the institution being awarded university status in 1978 as the Wesleyan University-Philippines.

In 1970, Dr. Gloria D.

Lacson, a former dean of the Mary Johnson College of Nursing was


elected as the 6th College President. She served for twenty-four years and was eventually the
first University President in 1978 when the institution was granted its University status. During
her term, nine new programs were offered and the Information and Development Desk was
created which later became the Research and Development Office. It was also under her
leadership that the University had enormous improvements in terms of facilities as seen in the
construction of several buildings which now house the different academic programs of the
University.

It was during Dr. Lacson’s term (1970-1994) when many great improvements took place. The
three-storey EZE building, now housing the College of Education, was completed. Likewise, the
four-story Academic Building was finished which now houses the Colleges of Commerce, and
Arts and Sciences. The four-storey Library and Research Building was also made available for
occupancy. The three-storey Administration Building was finished and was named after Gloria
D. Lacson.

Because of the steady growth and high academic standards, competent and dedicated faculty,
personnel, improved facilities, expanded academic programs, broadened base of clientele, and
enriched community and social services, Philippine Wesleyan College was awarded a University
status and became the Wesleyan University-Philippines on April 24, 1978.
