Child Abuse
1. Definition
Child abuse is when a child is intentionally harmed by an adult or another child
it can be over a period of time but can also be a one-off action. It can be physical, sexual
or emotional and it can happen in person or online. It can also be a lack of love, care and
attention – this is neglect.
2. Types
Types of child abuse are broken down in four distinct categories:
• Physical abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Emotional abuse
• Neglect
Physical child abuse is an injury resulting from physical aggression. Even if the injury
was not intended, the act is considered physical abuse. The injury from physical child
abuse may be the result of:
E.g.: Pinching, biting, choking, burning with cigarettes, scalding water, or hot objects.
Sexual abuse of a child is any sexual act between an adult and a child, includi ng
intercourse, rape, oral sex, and sodomy.
Emotional child abuse is any attitude, behavior, or failure to act that interferes with
a child's mental health or social development. It can range from a simple verbal insult
to an extreme form of punishment.
Physical Neglect: Failure to provide food, clothing appropriate for the weather,
supervision, a home that is hygienic and safe, and medical care, as needed.
Educational Neglect: Failure to enroll a school-age child in school or to provide
necessary special education
Emotional Neglect: Failure to provide emotional support, love, and affection.
