The Electromagnetic Spectrum 1

Lesson 2

2
Lesson
2

❖ Andre-Marie Ampere
 discovered that a wire carrying electric
current can attract or repel another
wire next to it that’s also carrying
electric current

3
Lesson
2

❖ Andre-Marie Ampere
 formulated Ampere’s Law of Electromagnetism and produced
the best definition of electric current during his time
 proposed the existence of a particle we now recognize as the
electron
 SI unit of electric current (A), the ampere, is named in his
honor

6
Lesson
2

❖Michael Faraday
 best known for his discovery of
electromagnetic induction
 had also made fundamental
contributions to the electromagnetic
theory of light

7
Lesson

8
Lesson
2

❖Heinrich Hertz
 applied Maxwell’s theories to the
production and reception of radio
waves
 unit of frequency of a radio wave -
one cycle per second - is named the
hertz (Hz), in honor of him
 proved the existence of radio
waves in the late 1880s

9
Lesson
2

❖Heinrich Hertz Experiment

 He used two rods that served as

a receiver and a spark gap as
the receiving antennae. Where
the waves were picked up, a
corresponding spark would
jump.

12
Lesson
2

❖James Clerk Maxwell

 developed a scientific theory to
better explain electromagnetic
waves
 When Maxwell used this field
theory to assume that light was
an electromagnetic wave, and
then correctly deduced the finite
velocity of light, it was a
powerful logical argument for
the existence of the
electromagnetic force field
13
Lesson
2

❖James Clerk Maxwell

 noticed that electrical fields and
magnetic fields can couple
together to form electromagnetic
waves
 discovered that a changing
magnetic field will induce a
changing electric field and vice
versa.

14
Lesson
2

❖James Clerk Maxwell

 described and quantified the relationships between
electricity, magnetism and the propagation of
electromagnetic waves--Maxwell's Equations.

 he calculated the speed of an electromagnetic wave

and found that the speed of an electromagnetic wave
was almost identical to the speed of light.

 based on this discovery, he was the first to propose

that light was an electromagnetic wave

16
Lesson
2

❖ Maxwell’s Equation

(1) electric field diverges from electric charge, an

expression of the Coulomb force,
(2) there are no isolated magnetic poles, but the
Coulomb force acts between the poles of a magnet,
17
Lesson
2

❖ Maxwell’s Equation

(3.) electric fields are produced by changing magnetic

fields, an expression of Faraday’s law of induction,
(4.) circulating magnetic fields are produced by changing
electric fields and by electric currents
18
Lesson
2

❖ Hans Christian Oersted

 discovered that the electric
current in a wire can deflect a
magnetized compass needle
