IMPORTANCE OF URBAN PLANNING

Urban planning is a field of study wherein it deals with problem-solving that focuses
on the creation, organization, and appropriation of urban spaces (Ghisleni, C., 2022).
Furthermore, it is the process of coming up with ideas that will serve as solutions in which
will improve the existing urban area and establish a new urbanization of the specific area.
Urban planning is therefore crucial in the current climate, where there is much discussion
about the future of cities as a way to combat climate change. It deals with problems arising
from urbanization, such as pollution, traffic jams, urban voids, and ecological impacts
(Ghisleni, C., 2022). In addition, urban planning can count on sociologists, historians,
economists, and geographers since it is considered as a multidisciplinary activity (Ghisleni,
C., 2022). Local authorities from the government, business, or other international
organizations are also involved in the process. Urban planning in relation to the government
can produce a document known as a master plan, which contains all the foundational
information and guidelines for the development of a particular region (Ghisleni, C., 2022).
With that being said, the goal of urban planning is to outline the steps that need to be taken to
raise the standards of living for the populace, including issues with access to opportunities,
security, and even the natural environment.

Based on my knowledge regarding urban design as discussed in our planning 2


course, the role of urban design is to design the features of the city based on plans. In other
words, it deals with more specific elements and features of the urban environment such as
network of paths, roadways, open and public spaces, districts, etc. With that being said, it
focuses on design and user experience and works at the feature and system level (TerraCast,
2019). It covers everything from public space to infrastructure, along with travel, scenery,
and lodging for the local population. On the other hand, urban planning is planning a city's
structures, such as its policies, infrastructure, neighborhoods, construction rules, and
regulations (TerraCast, 2019). By definition, urban planning is the "planning of city
strategies, structures, and policies," with a stronger technical and political emphasis on these
three levels (TerraCast, 2019). Both of these concepts aim to build adaptable and sustainable
environments that will improve the quality of life for those who live, work, and travel to that
area. Although they both have the same goal in mind, these two terms have different levels
of operation and distinct foci. The overall appearance, atmosphere, and usability of a city are
greatly influenced by both urban design and urban planning. Each one contributes in a
different way to the general well being of a city.

Urban planning is essential to a city's ability to function, accommodate population


growth, and draw in business (Archistar, N.D.). The way an urban environment is planned
has an impact on every important part of it. This includes transportation, city area design, and
infrastructure. It also determines the layout and permitted densities of our residential,
commercial, and industrial zones. Urban planning ensures that cities and towns are planned
which has an impact on national parks, ecological diversity, heritage sites, and natural
resources (Archistar, N.D.). Therefore, these can be preserved for future generations to enjoy
by passing and upholding the appropriate legislation. Disregarding or neglecting urban
planning may quickly become inefficient and unwelcoming for both residents and companies
of the city (Archistar, N.D.). With that being said, residents may experience traffic
congestion, inadequate infrastructure, susceptible to climate change, fire hazards, flooding,
etc. As a result, the city will become unsustainable to live in and may hinder the growth of
the population and economy. Therefore, numerous aspects of urban life are covered and
influenced by urban planning. A complete, consistent strategy can make life in urban areas
almost perfect, from economic issues to social and environmental problems to safety and
wellbeing (Archistar, N.D.). On the other side, a city can become uninhabitable if there are no
such preparations in place.

One example of an urban planning project in the Philippines is Bonifacio Global City
(BGC), known as “Home of Passionate Minds”, it has contemporary city appeal that makes it
walkable for the people, has green spaces, and a vibrant, multicultural community (Go, M.,
N.D.). BGC follows current guidelines for urban planning, in contrast to many other areas of
Metro Manila. This city promotes a lifestyle that is sustainable with modern conveniences.
This city has an orderly, grid-style urban planning which makes it walkable and bike-friendly
for people (Go, M., N.D.). The area surrounding BGC has numerous parking structures and
open spaces for those who arrive in the city by car (Go, M., N.D.). Many businesses in the
Bonifacio High Street neighborhood provide outside dining, and the area's wide sidewalks are
ideal for joggers and animal lovers who wish to explore the city on foot. Furthermore, having
brand stores, restaurants, and bars situated in a colorful park with interactive artworks in
Bonifacio High Street makes it appealing for people. These interactive spaces made BGC
become a functional “work, live, and play” community (ULI Philippines, 2020). According to
ULI Philippines, “In the next few years, the government’s plan is to connect BGC to other
key population centers in Metro Manila through the country’s first subway line.”. With all of
these in mind, BGC is one of the concrete examples of urban planning projects in the
Philippines.

As a potential future architects, I will serve as an advocate for the existing


communities which it will benefit a large scale of users such as planning green spaces and
community facilities, ensure affordable housing, maintaining structures around the city,
implementing transportation plans that are needed by the community, Plan for the
construction and existence of new buildings, etc. In addition, all these features are needed
especially nowadays which will adapt to the post-pandemic world and to necessary changes
in a timely manner when macro environment changes. With these in mind, I have to pay
attention to the community and consider the needs of the city residents such as physical
environment, social environment, and economic environment. As a result, the city will
become efficient, inviting, and sustainable for residents, tourists, and other users.
