LEC Quiz 3

The document contains a chemistry assignment with multiple calculation problems involving determining the pH and pOH of various acid and base solutions given molar concentrations, as well as using the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to calculate pH for buffer solutions involving weak acids and bases. Students are asked to show their work and include appropriate units in their answers.

CHEM 207L

Direction: Answer the following questions. Show your solution. Every item worth 3 points (2 points for
the solution and 1 point for the final answer). Don’t forget to write the symbols or unit for your final
answer.

1) What is the pH of a 0.0453 M HCl solution?

2) What is the pOH of a 0.0563 M HCl solution?
3) What is the pH of a 7.28 x 10-3 M KOH solution?
4) A solution is created by measuring 4.60 x 10 -3 moles of NaOH and 6.95 x 10 -4 moles of HCl into a
container and then water is added until the final volume is 1.00 L. What is the pH of this
solution? Note: Since there is both acid and base we will assume a 1 mole acid:1 mole base ratio of
neutralization.
5) What is the pH of a 5.1 x 10-5 M NaOH solution?
6) Find the pH of a solution that contains 3.25 gram of H2SO4 dissolved in 2.75 liters of solution.
(Note: Compute for the Molarity of H2SO4 then followed by computing the Ph).
7) Find the pH of a 0.000841 M solution of sodium hydroxide.
8-9)A certain brand of rootbeer has a hydrogen concentration equal to 2.1 x 10 -5 M. What is the pH
and pOH of this rootbeer?
10). Dr. Peepper has a H(+) = 1.4 X 10-5M. What is its Ph?

Complete the table below.

Calculate the values of both pH and pOH of the following solutions:
pH pOH
a. 0.020 M HCl
b. O.OO50 M NaOH
c. A blood sample of
7.2 x 10-8 M of H ions.
d. 0.00035 M KOH
e. 1.9 x 10-5 M Sulfuric acid.

Computation for Weak Acids and Weak Bases using Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation.
1. A mixture of 0.20 M acetic acid and 0.30 M sodium acetate is given. Calculate the Ph of the
medium if the pKa is equal to 4.76.
2. The Ph of the given solution of lactic acid and lactate is 4.30. Calculate the pKa of lactic acid,
when the concentration of lactic acid and lactate are 0.020 M and 0.073 respectively.
3. What is the ratio of the concentration of acetic acid and acetate ions required to prepare a
buffer with Ph 5.20. The pKa of acetic acid is 4.76.
