Social Science - A social science is any branch of academic study or science


that deals with human behavior in its social and cultural aspects.

Emergence of New Discipline and Studies

1. Anthropology - systematic study of humanity, with the goal of


understanding our evolutionary origins, our distinctiveness as a species,
and the great diversity in our forms of social existence across the world
and through time.
a. Physical Anthropology - branch of anthropology concerned with the
origin, evolution, and diversity of people
b. Cultural Anthropology - branch of anthropology concerned with the
content of particular cultures, explain variation among cultures, and
study processes of cultural change and social transformation.
c. Linguistics - an interdisciplinary field dedicated to the study of
language as a cultural resource and speaking as a cultural practice.
d. Archeology - study the material remains of present and past cultural
systems to understand the technical, social and political
organization of those systems and the larger culture cultural
evolutionary process that stand behind them.

2. Geography - The study of places and the relationships between people


and their environments. Human Geography - one the major branches in
geography and it mainly covers studies of the human race.

Here are some examples of disciplines in human geography:

• cultural geography
• economic geography
• health geography
• historical geography
• political geography
• population geography
• rural geography
• social geography
• transport geography

3. Economics - a social science that focuses on the production, distribution,


and consumption of goods and services, and analyzes the choices that
individuals, businesses, governments, and nations make to allocate
resources.

• Economics is the study of how people allocate scarce resources for


production, distribution, and consumption, both individually and
collectively.
• The two branches of economics are microeconomics and
macroeconomics.
• Economics focuses on efficiency in production and exchange.

• Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) are
widely used economic indicators.

4. Sociology - The study of the development, structure, and functioning of


human society.

• the study of social problems.


• The four main theoretical perspectives in the field of sociology are: a)
symbolic interactionism theory, b) social conflict theory, c) structural-
functional theory, and d) feminist theory.
5. Political Science - The branch of knowledge that deals with systems of
government; the analysis of political activity and behavior. It Focuses on
the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state,
national, and international levels.
