ANALYSIS
LET US START OUR LESSON PROPER.

Today, we will talk about Common Lapses in grammar and

sentence structure.
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE, INC.
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
4A’s Detailed Lesson Plan

Common Lapses in grammar and sentence structure can be

identified according to:

COMMON LAPSES IN GRAMMAR

 Subject Verb Agreement

 Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement
 Parallel Structure
 Modifier

Now let’s talk about first the Subject Verb Agreement,

Everybody, please read the meaning of it.

Subject-verb agreement refers to the relationship between

the subject and predicate of the sentence. Subjects and verbs
must always agree in two ways: tense and number. For this
post, we are focusing on number, or whether the subject and
verb are singular or plural.
It is the grammatical rule that the verb or verbs in a sentence
must match the number, person, and gender of the subject.

Thank you.

That means most English subject-verb agreement is about

quantity: if the subject is singular, the verb must be singular; if
the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.

I have here examples:

1. The light in the lamppost flicker each night.

What is the subject in this sentence? *Light

Very good!
What is the verb?
*Flicker
Very good!

Do you think this sentence is correct?

No ma’am.
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE, INC.
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
4A’s Detailed Lesson Plan

Why?

Because in this sentence, the subject light is singular;

therefore, the verb that describes the action of the subject
must also be singular.
Very good!
So, the correct sentences is:

1. The light in the lamppost flickers each night.

Very good!
Because the subject “light” is singular and singular form of the
verb flicker is “flickers”.

Do you understand?
Yes ma’am!
Very good!

Next example but before that everybody please read:

If the subject was plural, the verbs would have to change
form to agree with the subject.

For example:

2. The lights in the lampposts flicker each night.

In this sentence, since the subject is now plural, the -s has to

be removed from the verb in order to have subject-verb
agreement.

Is it clear?
Yes ma’am!

Very good!

Now let us have our last example for subject verb agreement,
Everybody please read: 3. They rides the school bus in the afternoon.

What is the subject in this sentence?

Very good! *They
What is the verb?
Very good! *rides

Do you think this sentence is correct?

No ma’am.
Why?
Because in this sentence, the subject They is plural; therefore,
the verbs that describe the action of the subject must also
be plural.

So, the correct sentences is:

3.They ride the school bus in the afternoon.
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE, INC.
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
4A’s Detailed Lesson Plan

Very good!
The subject is plural, the -s has to be removed from the verb in
order to have subject-verb agreement.

Is it clear?
Yes ma’am!

Okay now let’s move to the next, the Pronoun Antecedent

Agreement.

Everybody, please read the meaning of it. Pronoun antecedent agreement means ensuring that the
pronoun in a sentence agrees with its antecedent in number.
This means that either both must be singular or both must be
plural.

Thank you!
To understand pronoun antecedent agreement better, it is helpful
to review what pronouns and antecedents are.
Everybody, please read.
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a previously
mentioned noun in a sentence. It is used to avoid recurring
mentions of the noun for brevity and clarity.

The noun being substituted by the pronoun is known as the

antecedent. Ante means before, so the antecedent usually
occurs before the pronoun. The antecedent in a sentence can
also be another pronoun – in which case the pronoun
following it is called the referent.
Thank you!
Here is an example to illustrate:

What do you notice about this statement?

1. `Jacob said Jacob’s parents will be coming to town this
weekend.

So, to avoid repetition, the second occurrence of the noun can

be replaced with a suitable pronoun as follows: The repeated use of the noun Jacob in the sentence above is
leading to awkward sentence construction.

What is the antecedent and the pronoun in the sentence?

RJacob said his parents will be coming to town this

weekend.
Very Good!

Now let us have another example;

Jacob is the antecedent, while his is the pronoun
substituting it, or the referent.
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE, INC.
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
4A’s Detailed Lesson Plan

Is there a grammatical error in the sentence?

2.Mark puts her book on the table after their class.
Why?

Yes ma’am.

Very good, so it should be:

Because the pronoun is referring to “Mark” and the correct
Is it clear? pronoun to be use for Mark is “His” not Her.

*Mark puts his book on the table after their class.

Okay very good!

Yes ma’am!
Okay, last example:

Is there a grammatical error in the sentence?

Why?

3.The students left his food for lunch in the house.

Yes ma’am!

Because the pronoun is referring to the stud4ents and because

Very good! we don’t kno the gender of the students, the correct pronoun
The plural noun students is the antecedent his. Therefore, to be use is “Their”.
the pronoun that must be used to agree with it is the plural
pronoun their.

So it should be?

Is it clear class? 3.The students left their food for lunch in the house.

Yes ma’am!

Okay let us move to the Parallel Structure.

Everyone, please read the meaning.
It is use of the same pattern of words to show that two or
more words or ideas have an equal importance. This can
happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual way to
join parallel structures is with the use of
coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "or."
Thank you!
Using the same pattern of words to show that two or more
ideas have the same level of importance is the definition Parallel structure is repetition of a certain form, which
of parallel structure. provides balance and clarity in your writing. It can also be

4A’s Detailed Lesson Plan

used as an effective technique by highlighting important

information or as a way to emphasize powerful points in your
writing.

I have here example, everyone please read.

1. Louise will swim, bike, and run this weekend at her

triathlon.'
Do you think this sentence is parallel?

Why? Yes ma’am!

Because all three verbs in this sentence are in the same tense,
or form. This creates a smooth flow to the sentence.

Very good!
Now please read the next

2. Daniel spent his Saturday afternoon cooking chili, then he

Do you think this sentence is parallel? watched football, and took a nap.

Why? No ma’am.

Because the use of 'ing' in the word 'cooking’ does not match
the other verb forms in the sentence.

Very good!
Last example is: 3. Ellen likes to hike, attending the rodeo, and take
afternoon naps.

Do you think this sentence is parallel? Yes ma’am.

Why? Because the use of 'ing' in the word 'dancing’ does not match
the other verb forms in the sentence.

Very good!
So it should be?
Ellen likes to hike, attending the rodeo, and take
afternoon naps.
Is it clear?

Very good!

And now the last is Modifier.

Modifiers are words, phrases, and clauses that affect and

detail that can make a sentence more engaging, clearer, or

specific. The simplest form of a modifier would be an

adjective or adverb. But again, modifiers can come in the
form of phrases and clauses that act like adjectives and
adverbs.

Thank you!

For example, in the following sentence, the word "burger" is

modified by the word "vegetarian":

Everyone please read the first example: 1. I'm going to the Saturn Café for a vegetarian burger.

What is the modifier in the sentence? The Vegetarian.

Very good!
The modifier "vegetarian" gives extra information about what
kind of burger it is.
Yes ma’am
Is it clear?

A modifier can be an adjective (a word that modifies a noun,

Okay next, everyone, please read. like "burger"), but it can also be an adverb (a word that
modifies a verb):

Example:
2.  The student carefully proofread her draft.

*Carefully
What is the adjective in the sentence?

Very good! *it modifies the verb "proofread," giving important details
The adverb "carefully" is the modifier in this example— about how the proofreading was conducted.

Is it clear? Yes ma’am.

A modifier can even be a phrase or clause, as in the following

example:
3. She studied in the library.

Thank you!
What is the phrase in the sentence?
*In the library.
QUEZONIAN EDUCATIONAL COLLEGE, INC.

Here, the phrase "in the library" gives us extra information

about the verb, "studied."

1.) Why is it important to have a good knowledge of grammar
rules in writing? Because well-written output that can be easily understood
will come from having a solid understanding or having a
good knowledge of grammar rules and the wisdom to apply
them in writing.

2.) Why do you think some people who are not that good in
