Expanding Definitions of Words.
The activities in this module are arranged sequentially to help the learners
understand the topic and develop the desired skill or learning competency.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning.
Remind the learner that if there are things, he or she does not understand, he
or she must not hesitate to call for your help and assistance.

Welcome to the English Grade 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
Expanding Definitions of Words.
Each person is endowed with gifts – talents and skills. These gifts are nurtured
for a certain purpose. Through your talents and skills, you may accomplish
something. Hence, this resource material will help you achieve the necessary
competencies that would make you become an effective and efficient individual.
The activities in this module are arranged sequentially to help you understand
the topic and develop the desired skill or learning competency.
As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own learning. Take

However, for the last column, What I Learned, you can only fill in the box after
you have learned something from the inputs, discussions, or Let Us Study portion of
this module. After which try to figure out the things you learned upon doing the
given tasks. From then on, you can go back and answer the last column box.

Yes, you are correct! We are extending or expanding the word! Just imagine,
from a simple one word, you are now able to expand it longer making it into a sentence
by just adding up the information that you know.

What you have just done is actually an example of extended or expanded


definition of words.
To understand fully the lesson, consider the given information below.
What is an expanded definition of words?

Expanded definition defines and explains a single term, concept, or


object.

In defining a term, all you need to do is to be familiar with these components:

Steps to expand a definition of word using the illustration above:

1. First, classify the word.


2. Second, picture out its image.
3. Next, gather factual information about the word.
4. Then, identify its key traits and characteristics.
5. After which identify what are those from your lists can be and cannot be
included in forming the definition of the word.
6. Lastly, use the pattern in the formulation of an expanded definition of word.
For instance, based on the illustration above, how will you define flood?
