CLC 12
In Grade 10 and 11 I decided to take textiles. Honestly, I was not that interested in
sewing or anything related to textiles, my sister wanted me to take the class with her, so I did it
for her. It started with us learning how to sew straight lines and use different stitches and then
we started our first project which was a pin cushion. I was proud of what I made, but I was still
not into sewing. She then started a new segment of crocheting. I picked up how to do it quickly.
I learned how to make a perfect square and all different types of stitches. I was fascinated by it.
I then spoke with my teacher and asked if I would be able to do crochet projects instead of
sewing and she said yes. The first project I made was a purse. I am still to this day proud of it,
and I use it all the time in the summertime. I would always watch YouTube videos and
Instagram reels of people and their creations, and it inspired me to make something bigger. I
came across a video of a girl making a Harry Styles cardigan. I was not a fan of the colours so I
decided to take my own spin on it and make it my final project. It is blue, pink, purple and white
and took approximately 30 hours to complete. I spent a total of $50 dollars buying materials,
but it was worth it. I had fun with it. For my skill development it helped me learn that you’ll run
into problems or have fails, but there's always a solution to fix it and make it work. I also
learned how to create my own pattern. I followed how this one girl made hers but decided to
make mine a little differently to make it fit me perfectly. It worked. This project was a very good
learning experience for me because there were plenty of tears and frustration when creating
the piece. I learned the type of math needed to determine the size of each square I needed and
the amount of yarn I would use. It helped me learn to make tough decisions and how to
organize my time as well as figure out the number of materials I needed. For future
connections, it taught me to put aside time to work on projects, stick to deadlines and become
independent and responsible to get my own supplies.
With the knowledge I have learned from making the cardigan, I plan to make another with the
fully functional pattern I have created. I received a 95% on it and that was truly the highlight of
my Grade 11 year. For someone who had only been crocheting for under a year, it was quite an
accomplishment. Since making the cardigan, I have created plenty of shirts and a sweater vest
inspired by one Emma Chamberlain was seen wearing.
