1. Select two ecological/environmental
principles and explain by giving examples ( 10 points)
We live in a world where we do not exist for ourselves. From our birth, we came
from our biological mothers which immediately connects us with another living being.
Growing up humans shall be exposed to culture within their family and the environment
they live in. Cultures can be connected to nature like the concept of festivals, for
example here in Dasmariñas, the municipality relates the growth of the city to a
butterfly’s metamorphosis. A butterfly goes through a rigorous process to become
something more beautiful. Living things rely on each other and has a give and take
relationship. Humans needs to take care of their crops, cultivating them regularly for the
crops to grow healthily. As time progresses, these crops would produce fruits as it ends
it cycle to provide humans food. There could also be a process of pollination during this
course connecting certain plants in one area to another. It is like a domino effect which
benefits numerous beings.
One of the limits of our nature is that there can never be too much of something.
Earth is finite in accommodating certain amount of beings. Just like a scale sides must
be even so there would be no imbalance. Imbalance disrupts the concept of being
connected as there less factors of each side to contribute benefits. For example, if an
island started to overpopulate with snakes there would be a scarcity in prey as demand
for food shall increase. The same way with cities being overpopulated with citizens. An
area can only hold maximum amount of individuals residing may it be space living as
well as availability of resources like water and food.
2. Cite one (1) ethical position and one (1) environmental
attitude or behavior which you can apply as
a student of Environmental Science. Explain your answer ( 10 points)
An ethical position is that the society should allow the modernization of jeepneys.
The new set of vehicles will be more environment friendly as it is operated with electric
motors powered by batteries. It would greatly reduce the pollution coming from public
utility vehicle. The advantages of this modernization can greatly affect transportation
flow, improved public comfort and safety. An environmental attitude I can apply to this
take is the preservation ethic. Jeepney modernization will come along with great social
and economic costs. Franchising would be more costly that the traditional ones which
cannot be accommodated by current jeepney operators. When it comes to the social
cost, traditional jeepneys are part of the Filipino culture thus some may say that we are
eradicating such identity. However, we are already experiencing the major disadvantage
of traditional jeepneys because of its major contribution to air pollution. Minding that we
should preserve clean air for the sake of our well-beings and to remember that the world
will not immediately heal itself if we continue damaging it. One can raise awareness
about the importance of clean air and the effect of smoke emissions from vehicles to our
ozone layer by sharing correct facts from reliable sources.
