Matter

This document discusses the different states of matter and types of chemical and physical changes. It defines matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. The three common states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. Plasma is another state of matter that exists at very high temperatures. Chemical properties involve changes in chemical composition, while physical properties do not change the chemical makeup. There are four main types of chemical reactions: combination, decomposition, single replacement, and double replacement. A chemical change forms new substances, while a physical change only alters physical properties like shape or size.

Matter

• occupy space and has mass

• no two matters can occupy the same space
weight
• force apply
mass
• amount of substance
heterogeneous- a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
homogeneous- a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture the components
are uniform in the whole solution, and its composition is the same throughout and it appears like a
single substance
STATE OF MATTER – solid, liquid, gas, plasma, bose – Einstein condensate
Solid
• definite shape, definite volume
• each particle is molecularly attracted
• molecular attraction
• can be broken apart by melting or heating
Liquid
• loosely pack
• free flow
• free surface
• shape of a container
• does not have a definite shape
• fixed volume
GAS
• no molecular attraction
• shape of a container
• volume of a container
• does not have a defined volume
• nor defined shape
• far apart
• fast-moving
• not organized in any particular way
STATE OF MATTER

SOLID LIQUID GAS PLASMA

PLASMA- at very high temperatures of stars, atoms lose their electrons. The mixture of
electrons and nuclei that result is the plasma state of matter.
A chemical property is any material property that becomes evident during or after a chemical
reaction. Ex. Wood burns to form ash and smoke
A physical property characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical
composition. Ex. Density, color, hardness, melting boiling points, and electrical conductivity

CHANGE OF MATTER

CHEMICAL CHANGE PHYSICAL CHANGE

Change of composition new substance will be a form Identity will remain the size or shape of matter may be
changed, but no chemical reaction occurs

CHEMICAL REACTION
- a combination reaction is when two or more reactants unite to generate a single product. To put it
simply when two or more elements or chemicals react to generate a single molecule, the chemical
reaction is known as a combination reaction a synthesis reaction is another name for a combination
reaction. A + B = AB
- chemical decomposition, or chemical breakdown, is the process or effect of simplifying a single
chemical entity into two or more fragments, chemical decomposition is usually regarded and defined as
the exact opposite of chemical synthesis. AB= A, B
- single replacement reaction sometimes called a single displacement reaction in which one element is
substituted for another element in a compound. The starting materials are always pure elements, such
as pure zinc metal or hydrogen gas, plus an aqueous compound. AB + C = AC+B
- double replacement reaction is a reaction in which the positive and negative ions of two ionic
compounds exchange places to form two new compounds. The general form of a double replacement (
also called double replacement)
AB + CD = AD+CB
in this reaction, A and C are positively charged cations, anions’ double replacement reactions generally
occur between substances in an aqueous solution, in order for a reaction to occur, one of the products
is usually a solid precipitate, a gas, or a molecular compound such as water

CLASS OF MATTER
SUBSTANCE- one type of molecule/compound separated only chemically, element one, compound two
or more.
MIXTURE- two or more substances, homo, heterogenous.
