CONTINUOUS LEARNING ACTIVITIES (CALAs)

WHAT IS CALA?

Continuous Assessment Learning Activity (CALA)

-This is any learning activity or assessment that requires learners to perform, demonstrate their
knowledge, understanding and proficiency.

-CALA yields a tangible product and/or performance that serve as evidence of learning.

-a CALA presents a situation that calls for learners to apply their learning in context.

-Pathway research Project: A detailed study venture done by a learner in a chosen career area.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CALA ACTIVITIES

-Problem based activities

-They are research based activities.

-Learners apply knowledge, concepts, and skills learnt.

-Learners generate knowledge.

-Incorporate practical activities such as data collection through interviews, questionaires,


checklists, observation and experiments.

-Originality, creativity and innovativeness.


-Learning area integration

TYPES OF CALA TOOLS

-Pen and Paper activities, e.g., in Languages.

-Practical active=ties, e.g., Tech-Voc learning areas.

-Demonstrations, e.g., in Physical Education, Sports and Mass Displays.

-Constructions and Design of Structures and Models.


-Dramatizations, e.g., in Languages and Literature.

-Projects.

TEACHER CALA GUIDE

-This is guided by the Syllabus.

-CALA type: the broad expected outcomes deliverables.

-Topic: Address specific topics.

-Concepts or skills: Related to the specific topics.

-Dimensions/Criteria to be assessed: Scope of related content.

-Objectives to be assessed: Related to the skills being assessed.

-CALA Context: Give the context and background of the problem to be solved.

LEARNER CALA GUIDES

-Learner CALA Guide

-Topic: Address specific topics.

-Background: Context of the problem to be solved.

-The activity: Detail of the problem and what needs to be done, including mark allocations where
applicable.

-How the learner will be assessed: Detailed information on how the learner will be assessed.

Achievement Standards

-These are descriptions of the expected qualities of a learner’s work that provide a basis of
judging how well the learner has demonstrated that they know, understand and can DO.

Here is how one Dictionary defines "skill":

*A CALA invites you to identify a problem that you can solve using one or more of the things
(competences/skills) you have learned in one or more of the Subjects (Learning Areas) you do at
