11. Express in exponential notation

(a) a  a  c  b  b  c  a

(b) 3  p  p  r  3  q  p  r  q

Ans:

(a) a  a  c  b  b  c  a

Bringing like terms together we get,

 aaabbcc
 a 3b 2 c 2

(b) 3  p  p  r  3  q  p  r  q

Bringing like terms together we get,

 3 3 p  p  p  q  q  r  r
 9 p3q 2 r 2

12. Out of 450 students in a school, only 350 students attended class on a particular day.
What fraction of students were absent from the school on that day?

3
Ans.

No. of students in school = 450

No. of students who attended the school = 350

∴ No. of students who were absent from school = 450  350  100

100 2
Therefore, the fraction of students who were absent from school = 
450 9

13. If 16 is subtracted from twice a number then it gives 4 more than 1.5 times of the
original number. What is the number?

Ans.

Let the number be x

If 16 is subtracted from twice the number, then the number will be = 2x 16

4 more than 1.5 times of the number = 1.5x  4

 2 x  16  1.5 x  4
2 x  1.5 x  4  16
0.5 x  12
12
x  24
0.5

Therefore, the original number is 24.

14. What is the exterior angle in any equilateral triangle?

Ans.

Let’s make the figure

4
The given ∆ABC is an equilateral triangle

So, ABC  ACB  BAC  60

The exterior angle is equal to the sum of opposite angles

ACD  ABC  BAC

So, ACD  60  60
ACD  120

15. The age of female teachers in a school is: 21yr, 20yr, 24yr, 22yr, 36yr, 30yr, 26yr. Find
the range of the age of teachers in that school?

Ans.

The range is the difference between the smallest value and the largest value. Among the given
ages,

The smallest age is 20yrs

The largest age is 36 yrs

Therefore, the range of the age of teachers in school is 36  20  16 yrs

16. Write a positive integer and a negative integer whose sum is 3 .

Ans. For the resultant to be negative, the negative integer should be greater than the positive
integer.

If the positive integer is 9 then the negative integer will be 12 .

Then, 9  (12)  9  12  3

17. The lengths of two sides of a triangle are 18 cm and 25 cm, between what two measures
should the length of the third side fall?

5
Ans. The third side of the triangle should not be more than the sum of remaining two sides and
should not be less than the difference of the remaining two sides.

The sum of two sides of triangle = 18  25  43cm

The difference between two sides of triangle = 25 18  7cm

Therefore, the third side should not be less than 7cm and more than 43cm.

18. Express 10800 as a product of prime factor only in exponential form?

Ans. The prime factors of 10800 are = 2  2  2  2  3 3 3 5  5

It can be written in exponential form as = 243352

Ans. The exterior angle of the triangle is equal to the sum of its opposite angles.

 150  50  x
150  50  x
x  100

The sum of all the angles of a triangle is equal to 1800.

 50  x  y  180
Substitute x by 100
50  100  y  180
150  y  180

38. PS is a median of a triangle PQR. Is PQ + QR + RP > 2PS? (Consider the sides of

triangles PQS and PRS.)

16
Ans. Since, the sum of lengths of any two sides in a triangle should be greater than the length of
third side.

Therefore, In ΔPQS, PQ + QS > PS ……….(i)

In ΔPRS, PR + RS > PS ……….(ii)

Adding eq. (i) and (ii),

PQ + QS + PR + RS > PS + PS

⇒ PQ + PR + (QS + RS) > 2 PS

⇒ PQ + PR + QR > 2 PS

Hence, it is true.
