INTRODUCTION
Economic activities are important because Primary economic activities deliver the raw
material for other industries which then further refine and develop these materials into
products to sell to the end customers.
Agriculture is an important activity because Agricultural activities include forestry
and harvesting fish in water farms or in their natural habitat. Famers face several
challenges with agriculture. The researcher will investigate some of the problem a
farmer faces
AIM OF STUDY
The Research’s will identify and describe some of the problems facing a peasant
farmer in Albion St Thomas
METHODOLOGY
On January 18 2023 the Geography group/ the researcher visited a farm in Albion,
St Thomas. Data to complete the research was collected by interviewing the farmer
and personal observation. Data was also collected by consulting secondary sources,
for example, textbooks and the internet. Data to complete the research was
collected between January, 18 and February 15 2023

PRESENTATION OF DATA

Agriculture is the science or practice of farming, including the cultivation of the

soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and
other products. Arable farming refers to the cultivation of crops, as opposed to
raising livestock. Peasant farming refers to the use of only basic tools to grow
crops and raise animals on a small scale and the produce is usually sold locally

Comparison between Commercial Arable farming& Peasant Farming

See Table 1 below

TABLE 1

Production for profit Production for home consumption

BENEFITS OF
AGRICULTURAL

Agriculture can help reduce poverty, raise incomes, and improve food security for
80% of the world's poor, who live in rural areas and work mainly in farming.
Caribbean countries and their people benefit from agriculture in numerous ways eg

* It provides employment. In many Caribbean countries

* Many Caribbean countries import more agricultural products than they export
* It provides fresh food
* It provides raw materials for many manufacturing industries such as food
processing.
* Many of the region’s major exports are agricultural products. Various Caribbean
countries export crops like bananas, cocoa, and rice to other countries within or
outside of the Caribbean.

Despite the benefits of agriculture farmers face several problems. The researchers
visited a peasant farm in Albion, St Thomas, and based on the investigation that
was conducted problems were identified.
PROBLEMS

The researcher visited a farm in Albion, St Thomas, The farm belongs to a farmer
named Mr. Bowen. Mr. Bowen was fifteen (15) acres but he used only nine (9) to
cultivate seven (7) crops such as mangoes, sour sops, cucumbers, sweet peppers,
and okra
See figure 1 below
The peasant farm the researcher visited was the typical peasant farm, for example,
Mr. Bowen uses simple tools and family labour See figure 2
WEATHER

The weather can cause problems, especially the rainfall. In the Caribbean, this
cannot always be depended upon to come when it is most needed and in desired
amounts. Farmers’ crops can be damaged or even completely destroyed by
droughts and floods. Heavy rain affects the mangoes. See figure 3
According to Mr. Bowen, heavy rain caused the East Indian mangoes to rot, he
stated that he loses 30 dozen mangoes per year (See plate1) East Indian mangoes
trees on the farm
INSECTS AND PEST

Farmers face severe losses if their trees and root crops are affected by insects and
pests. Insects such as beetles attack the crop and woodpeckers and Blue Squit
affects the soursop he also loses 50-60 dozen st julis mango

Larceny

Holding of farmers which are distance from their home sufferfrom the ossof
praedial larceny. This is dicourging to famers who at times abandon their land and
seek other occupation According to Mr. Bowen every year he loses more than 10
dozen East Indian mangoes as a result of stealing he stated that p larceny is simply
a part of the business
