Discuss the deterrent principle of shame (Hirī) and fear (ottappa) which guard
the world from falling into chaos (lokapāladhamma) with the special references of
Duka Puggalapaññatti.
All the teaching that our Lord Buddha had preached during his 45 years from
the time of Enlightenment until his great Parinibbāna has been collected as Piṭaka
canon which could be divided into three bevvies, also called the Three Baskets
(Tipiṭaka). The first one is Suttanta Piṭaka (discourses). There are 40 treatises in
Suttanta Piṭaka. The second one is Vinaya Piṭaka (Rules of conduct). There are 5
treatises in Vinaya Piṭaka. The last one is Abhidhamma Piṭaka (Higher teaching of
Lord Buddha’s philosophical and psychological matters). There are 7 treatises in
Abhidhamma Piṭaka.
The Lord Buddha preached Abhidhammā to his mother (who was reborn as
amale deity by the name of Saṇtusita in the Tusitā world) in Tāvatiṁtā at 110 Mahā
Era. For three months of vassa, all the devas who came tens of thousands of universes
were taught the Aabhidhammā Treatises.
It is said that when preaching the Abhidhammā to the gods of Tāvatiṁtā, the
Buddha would visit Anotatta lake every day, leaving a nimitta Buddha, on Sakka’s
throne to continue the preaching. After having bath in the lake and alms round, he has
taken his mid-day rest. During this time Sāriputta would visit him and learn
Abhidhammā from the Buddha, all that had been preached in Tāvatiṁtā during the
previous day. Having thus learnt the Abhidhammā, Sāriputta taught it back to his five
hundred pupils who were bats in their previous existences. The Abhidhammā has
been carried to this day by generations of disciples.
The term Abhidhammā consists of two words, i.e., Abhi (Higher, Greater,
More advanced and Special) and Dhamma (Teaching of Lord Buddha). Therefore,
Abhidhamma is known as the Higher teaching of Lord Buddha. This is because
Abhidhamma is higher, more advanced, more profound, more subtle and technical
than Suttanta and Vinaya.
In the 5th and 15th pairs of Duka Puggalapaññatti, Lord Buddha preached two
Lokapāladhamma, Hirī (Shame) and Ottappa (Fear) by designating 4 kinds of
individuals. They are
