CULTURE

What is culture- Language, religion, cuisine, social customs,

music, and the arts are all aspects of a particular group of

people's knowledge and characteristics, or culture. The term

"culture" is a general one that refers to social behavior,

institutions, and norms present in human societies as well as the

people that make up these groups as well as their knowledge,

beliefs, and abilities. Culture is frequently said to have originated

in or been influenced by a particular area or place.


IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE

Culture has intrinsic value, but it also has significant social and

economic benefits. Culture improves our quality of life and

boosts overall wellbeing for both individuals and communities

through better learning and health, higher tolerance, and

opportunities for social interaction. We can learn about one

another by immersing ourselves in cultures outside of our own.

This allows us to understand where people are from, what their

traditions are, and what issues they face as a group.


Food Filipino cuisine is heavily influenced by Spain, China, and

India. Most of the filipino foods are heavy on meat and it is

always paired with rice. Common methods of eating are using a

spoon and a fork and using one's hands (known as "kamayan").

RELIGION

Religion Filipino Catholic practice is unusually material and

physical, even among Catholic cultures. Devotions to Mary, the

suffering Christ, and the Santo Niño (Holy Child) are built

especially on powerful celebratory and penitential rituals

practiced and experienced in a variety of vernacular forms.


FIESTAS AND FESTIVALS Each city and barrio has at least one

local festival, usually on the feast of its patron saint - so that

there is always a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. The

most known festival in the philippines is the “sinulog” held in

cebu.

FAMILY

Family is considered to be the foundation of social life for most

Filipinos. The nuclear family is the core family unit, however

bonds are often tight knit among extended family members.


Handicrafts Filipinos are known for their exquisite handicrafts

such as wood carvings, weaving, and pottery. The diversity of

arts and crafts in the Philippines is due not only to its rich cultural

melting pot, but also to the abundance of natural materials

readily available, such as bamboo, rattan, and coconut shells, to

name a few.

LECHON

Lechon is one of the most popular dishes in Filipino food culture.

It brightens every feast of every household, commonly served

during occasions such as birthdays, fiesta, anniversaries,

HOW CULTURE INFLUENCES US

Our lives are greatly impacted by culture in many different ways.

Our principles, beliefs, and behaviors are shaped by it. It can

have an impact on our choices in food, clothing, language, music,

art, politics, and even religion. Our interactions with others, as

well as our physical and emotional health, can be impacted by

culture. Culture has an impact on how we learn, live, and behave.


PAG-MANO

Pag-mano Lamano or mano is the action of placing the back of

an elder’s hand on your forehead as a sign of respect. Kids were

taught to do this as a way to greet those who were older than

them, which included their grandparents, parents, uncles and

aunts, and even their parent’s friends. These days, we see the

younger generation beso or kiss the cheeks of their elders

instead of pag-mano. However, this practice is still very much

alive in the rural areas.


SINULOG FESTIVAL PLACE OF ORIGIN

The Sinulog Festival serves as a tribute to Santo Niño, the patron

saint of Cebu City. The festival features a grand parade with

participants dressed in colorful costumes, dancing to the beat of

drums and native gongs. People celebrate it on the third Sunday

of January.

HARANA

“Harana, as the song introduces, is an old Philippine tradition of

courtship in which a man bears his heart in song to a woman (and

sometimes vice versa), while standing underneath her window

at night.
CULTURAL DANCE

This practice of jumping between the poles eventually

transformed from a challenge into an artistic dance. Alongside

the Cariñosa dance, the Tinikiling is considered a national dance

in the Philippines and almost every Filipino knows how to do it.

BAYANIHAN

Bayanihan is a core essence of the Filipino culture. It is helping

out one’s neighbor as a community, and doing a task together,

thus lessening the workload and making the job easier. It is also

called the ‘community spirit’.
