TUTORIAL: Kinematics_17_ Solution

2
(1) Find the value of the force required to accelerate a body of mass 6 kg at 0.5 m/s .
(3N)
F = ma = 6 x 0.5 N = 3N

(2) A body of mass 10kg is moved from rest by a force of 100N. What is the value of
the acceleration of the body?
2
(10 m/s )
2
a = F/m = 100/10 = 10 m/s

2
(3) 75N force is used to pull a box at an acceleration of 1.5 m/s . Find the value of
the mass of the box.
(50 kg)
m = F/a = 75/1.5 = 50 kg

(4) A horizontal force of 12.5N is applied on a block of mass 3 kg. It moves on a

rough surface of friction 3.5N. Find the value of the acceleration of the block.
2
(3 m/s )
2
a = F/m = (12.5-3.5)/3 = 3 m/s

(5) A 20N force is used to pull 2 boxes, 2 kg and 3 kg.

T
2 kg 3 kg
20 N

(a) Find the value of acceleration.

(b) Find the tension of the string between two boxes.
2
(4 m/s , 8N)
2
a = F/m = 20/(3+2) = 4 m/s

T = ma = 2 x 4 = 8N
(6) A 3 kg mass is used to pull a 2 kg mass. Find the value of acceleration.
2
(6 m/s )

m1a T
2 kg
T
a
a 3 kg m2a

30N

Horizontally, T = m1a = 2a ------------(1)

Vertically, T + m2 a = m2g
=> T + 3a = 3 x 10 -----------(2)

Put (1) into (2):

2a +3a = 30
2
=> a = 6 m/s

(7) A force of 500 N acts on an object to move it 10 m in 2 s. Find the power

required. (2500W)

Solution: Power W = (F x s)/t = (500 x 10)/2 = 2500 W

(8) A 1kg object is fired vertically upwards from the ground with a speed of 100 m/s.
Find the maximum height it can rise. (500m)
Solution: By conservation of energy, the gain in potential energy is equal to the
loss of kinetic energy.mgh= (1/2)mv ,
h = (100 x 100)/ 2X10m/s = 500 m

(9) A hammer of mass 4 kg, and moving at 6 m/s, strikes a body of mass 12 kg at rest
and both hammer and the body move on freely together after the impact, find the
gain of kinetic energy of the body after the impact. (18J)

Solution:
By conservation of momentum, m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1+m2)v
The final velocity of both the hammer and the body v
= (4 x 6 + 12 x 0)/(4+12)
= 1.5 m/s
K.E. of body before impact = 0,
K.E. gain of body after impact = ½ (m1+m2)v22 = ½ x )/(4+12) x 1.52 = 18 J
(10) A 747 jet plane draws 4500 kg/s into its engine and ejects it at a speed of 360 m/s
relative to the engine. Find the thrust exerted by the jet at a forward speed of 800
km/h. (620kN)
Solution:
Solution: thrust= change of momentum per second
= 4500 x [360-(800 x1000÷3600)]
= 620 kN
