new lesson (One Student will lead the

(Checking of Attendance) (Students will tell who’s absent
for the day)
“So, how’s your day? Is it good so far?” “It was great Sir!

For the past four weeks we have learned

the different literary approaches, and one
of that is the reader’s reaction to
literature that is vital in interpreting the
meaning of the text.

Again, what do we mean by reader-

response approach?

Reader response suggests that

the role of the reader is essential
to the meaning of a text, for only
in the reading experience does
the literary work come alive. It
means that we as a reader play
an important role in interpreting
the message of the text.
The interpretations vary from the
perspective of the readers that is why it’s
complicated but giving a critique on a
specific text could help other readers to
somehow understand the text they are
about to read or to better understand a
text they just read.

We also encountered the elements in

literature. What are those?
Yes, Cheska can you recite those
elements? Sir we have character, plot,
setting, theme, point of view,
conflict, and tone.

Ok, thank you I’m glad that you all know

those elements. How about Literary
Devices? How many literary devices that Simile, Metaphor,

you know? Personification, Hyperbole,

Imagery, Symbolism

there are approximately 454 literary
devices in the world of literature and
some of those are what we called Literary

lesson What do we call when we evaluate,
analyze, describe, or interpret literary
works?

Literary Criticism Sir.

Ok, in criticism we aim to judge or
criticized the works it either positive or
negative criticism.
Critiquing a short story usually takes the
form of an essay. It is an in-depth
evaluation of the story for the purpose of
giving the reading public insight into the
story. Writing a critique requires you to
reassemble the elements in such a way
that your intended audience has a better
understanding of the story’s strengths,
weaknesses, and highlights.

This time I want you to read this two

main goal for today.

1. Identify different literary devices and

techniques.
2. Understand the importance of writing
a critique.
3. Write a critique on a particular literary

of the lesson. literary elements are part of what we
called “literary devices”. It has two
kinds, the element, and the technique.
And for today’s discussion, we will focus
more on the techniques.

Samantha, can you look for the definition

Technique is a way of carrying
out a particular task, the manner
in which technical details are
treated.
Ok Thank you Samantha. Technique in
other words is the method, the strategy,
style, systems tactics or in the simple
word it is the way of someone to make
his/her work more desirable.

In literature we called these Literary

techniques. This are structures in
literary texts that writers employ to
achieve not merely artistic ends but also
to give readers a greater understanding
and appreciation of their literary works.

Now we will better understand of literary

techniques through its definitions and
examples that I will give.

There are lot of techniques but for this

lesson, the four techniques will be given
emphasis. Please, listen to these
techniques for you to identify them easily

So, we have the Anticlimactic technique.
Manuel can you read the definition on
your notes?

Yes sir.

Anticlimactic – It is a technique

The ending of these stories are very

we call a Plot Twist technique.

E. Discussing new An analytic or critical review of a book or

concept and short story is not primarily a summary;
practicing new rather, it comments on and evaluates the
skills #2 work in the light of specific issues and
theoretical concerns in a course.

So now class I will give you some

guidelines in writing a critique paper
and remember we will include the
literary techniques that is used to that
specific short story.

First is the introduction.

The introductory paragraph for the short
story critique has 3 major elements: the
background, your opinion on the work as
awhile, and the thesis. The background
includes all of the relevant information
(especially who, what, when, where, and
why) leading up to the thesis. The thesis
includes the subject and opinion of the
paper followed by the main points. The
most important element in writing a
critique is a workable thesis statement,
which appears near the end of the
introductory paragraph.

Next is the body.

These can vary in length and in number.
If you state 3 main points in your thesis,
youshould have 3 development
paragraphs. For this assignment you
should have from 3-5main points. Include
the literary techiques that is presentend.
There maybe a mixed application of
techniques in one story. How these
techniques help to make the story more
desirable.

Last is the Conclusion,

Here you give your general impression of
the story. Did you enjoy it? In general are
thedescriptions clear, over emphasized
or not clear enough. You should also
brieflysummarize all the issues under
discussions. Any additional opinions on
the subjectwould be appropriate at this
time as well as any final conclusions.

Now you will try to make a critique essay

to this short story. But this time just focus
on making the introduction.

Now I hope this quote will help you.
Everybody please read.

Learn to see the difference between

constructive and destructive criticism.
Appreciate the constructive, ignore
the destructive.
~ John Douglas

That’s why writing a critique is

important. Writing a critique helps you to
develop an understanding of the work’s
purpose, intended audience,
development of argument or creative
style. You also help other readers to
recognize the strengths and weaknesses
of a certain literary piece. The main
purpose for writing a critique is to
evaluate somebody’s work in order to
increase the reader’s understanding of it.

Writing a critique is not to start an

argument between the writers and the
readers; it’s just a way of analyzing and
interpreting what is read. The critique
itself needs to be backed up with reasons.
It isn’t enough to say that a certain piece
flawed but why or how it’s flawed should
also be added. Likewise in the real life,
criticism will always be there. But what
matter most is that you can take
criticism constructively and that you
can bounce back with improvements.
