Question Bank - HMT Unit 2

This document contains a question bank for the Heat and Mass Transfer course at Excel Engineering College. It includes 20 multiple choice questions in Part A and 11 numerical problems in Part B related to convection heat transfer. The questions assess various concepts such as boundary layers, dimensionless parameters like Reynolds, Nusselt and Stanton numbers, forced and natural convection, and heat transfer calculations using properties like heat transfer coefficients. Students are expected to understand these fundamental concepts of convection and apply dimensional analysis to solve practical heat transfer problems.

1 Explain boundary layer concept with neat sketch. What is its significance 16 CO2 U
on heat transfer?
2 A flat plate 1m wide and 1.5m long is to be maintained at 90°C in air with a 16 CO2 AP
free stream temperature of 10°C. Determine the velocity with which air
must flow over flat plate along 1.5m side, so that the rate of energy
dissipation from the plate is 3.75 kW.
3 The air at 15 °C, 30 km/hr flows over cylinder of diameter 400 mm and 16 CO2 AP
length 1500 mm with surface temperature of 45 °C. Calculate the heat
transfer rate.
4 Atmospheric air at 275K and a free stream velocity of 20 m/s flows over a 16 CO2 AP
flat plate 1.5m long that is maintained at a uniform temperature of 325K.
Calculate the average heat transfer coefficient over the region where the
boundary layer is laminar, the average heat transfer coefficients over the
entire length of the plate and the total heat transfer rate from the plate to the
air over the length 1.5 m and width 1m. Assume transition occurs at Re c
=2x105.
5 Water flows through 2.5cm diameter tube at the rate of 0.5 kg/min. The 16 CO2 AP
tube surface is maintained at 110°C. If the temperature of water increases
from 20°C to 40°C, find the length of the tube.
6 Air at 25°C flow over 1m x 3m (3m long) horizontal plate maintained at 16 CO2 AP
200°C at 10 m/s. Calculate the average heat transfer coefficients and Heat
transfer rate.
7 A steam pipe 10 cm outside diameter runs horizontally in a room at 23°C. 16 CO2 AP
Take the outside surface temperature of pipe as 165°C. Determine the heat
loss per meter length of the pipe.
8 A thin 80cm long and 8cm wide horizontal plate is maintained at a 16 CO2 AP
temperature of 130°C in large tank full of water at 70°C. Estimate the rate
of heat input into the plate necessary to maintain the temperature of 130°C.
9 A steam pipe 10cm OD runs horizontally in a room at 23°C. Take outside 16 CO2 AP
temperature of pipe as 165°C. Determine the heat loss per unit length of the
pipe. Pipe surface temperature reduces to 80°C with 1.5 cm insulation.
What is the reduction in heat loss?
10 A 205 kg/hr of air are used to cool the system from 100 °C to 30 °C by 16 CO2 AP
flowing throughout a 3.5 cm inner diameter. Calculate the air side heat
transfer coefficient.
11 A water at 50 °C, 1m/s flows throughout a 15 mm diameter tube whose 16 CO2 AP
