LESSON 7
CLEAN ROOMS

ANNA RUTH E. DIAGBEL

Trainer
Cleaning will help ensure that you have
helped rid the air of dust particles and
allergens that may otherwise be in the air.
Being able to breathe will lead to a much
better night's sleep. Moreover, regularly
cleaning your home (and bedroom) can
help ensure that there are not any viruses
or bacteria harbored there.
INSECTS AND PESTS AND THEIR CONTROL MEASURES
Pest control is a program used to eradicate pests.
Pesticide is a chemical used to kill and control pests.
Below are types of pesticides.
➢ Insecticides are used to control ants, flies, moths,
cockroaches, and termites.
➢ Herbicides are used to control weeds or other
unwanted plants.
➢ Fungicides are used to control fungi that are
pathogenic or disease- causing.
➢ Rodenticides are used to control rats and rodents
Insects and pests include:
• Ants
• Moths
• Cockroaches
• Flies
• Mosquitos
• Spiders
• Mice
• Bed bugs
Characteristics:
➢ Eat tremendous amount of food of its size
➢ Its hairs and droppings contaminate food
➢ Can cause fire by gnawing electric wiring
➢ Carrier of disease like typhoid fever and jaundice
➢ Excellent climbers and good swimmers
➢ Rest in secure places like burrows, double walls, floors and rubbish
➢ Can squeeze through a 1/2 inch hole and can drop in 50 feet yet survive
➢ Come in different kinds, color and sizes
Control Measure
1. Maintain proper sanitation. Without food, they cannot survive.
Cover all food and stagnant water so that they will not have access
to them.
2. Cover all possible entrances by using screen, by patching up
holes and by closing doors all the time.
3. Use rat poising or rat baiting to eliminate rats.
4. Destroy hiding places of rats like crowded storerooms. Decongest
the stockroom, fumigate and keep them clean.
5. Use rat proofing to gets rats out of the building. It is easier to kill
rats that are already inside the building.
Characteristics:
➢ They carry disease-causing bacteria which they deposit on
food through their excreta, vomit and body contact.
➢ The female lays 25-40 eggs at one time, enclosed in a
leathery pouch called ootheca (she lays 80-120 ootheca)
➢ Hatching of their eggs depends on the temperature and
ranges from 4 -5 weeks or 32-42 days.
➢ Flattened bodies allows them to hide in narrow cracks,
crevices, cabinets, hallow walls, plumbing areas, dark places
and hard to reach areas.
Control Measure
1. Preventive-proper sanitation, prevention
of entrances and elimination of harborages.
2. Corrective-application of liquid pesticides
like residual knockdown and spray
insecticides.
3. Thorough and frequent treatment is
recommended
Characteristics:
➢ Carriers of bacteria that cause variety of human
diseases like typhoid, dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, etc.
➢ They feed on human and animal wastes. Their
bacteria stick to the mouth, foot and hair and are
deposited in the food intended for human consumption.
➢ They lay eggs 150 at one time, hatch in 24 hours or
less and within 10 days after they emerge from their
pupa.
Control Measure
1. Start with proper sanitation. Follow proper cleaning
procedures and promptly remove wastes from the area.
2. Keep all garbage cans covered. Once disposed, clean
the can thoroughly.
3. Treat all breeding places with larvicide.
4. Use residual spray, poison baits and space spraying
control.
5. Open and clean floor drains at least weekly.
6. Do not allow food particles to accumulate in floor
walls and junctions.
Characteristics:
➢ They are blood-sucking insects that annoy man and other animals.
➢ They do not only transmit various diseases like malaria and yellow
fever but they also turn potential recreational areas unsuitable for
development.
➢ Female mosquitoes usually need a blood meal in order to survive and
lay eggs. Males do not feed on the blood but on nectar and other plant
juices.
➢ Eggs laid in pools, growing plants, canals, empty barrels, tin cans, etc.,
hatch in one to 3 days depending on weather conditions. Two or three
days after its emergence, the female mosquito takes her first blood meal
then delivers the first batch of eggs, ranging from 15 to 140 or an average
of 57. Average life span is 30 days.
Control Measure
1. Remove stagnant water. Drain the pool or drum of water.
Do not leave bottles uncovered with stagnant liquid in them.
2. Empty mechanical control measures like the use of screen
and mosquito nets.
3. Utilize larvae control. Pour larvicide chemical like kerosene
and malathion on canals and other breeding places.
4. Utilize residual/knockdown spraying of non-toxic chemicals.
Methods of application may take the form of space sprays,
residue or smokes.
5. Apply repellant chemical.
GENERAL CONTROL MEASURES
1. Take proper measures to minimize the presence of rodents,
flies, cockroaches and other insects around the premises.
2. Keep the premises in a condition that prevents the hiding or
feeding of insects or rodents.
3. Implement a strong pest control program with the help of a
licensed, reliable Pest Control Company.
4. Openings to the outside of the building must be protected
against the entrance of rodents and flies by:
* Using tight-fitting, self-closing doors
* Closing windows
* Screening
* Controlling air currents
* Other means
Prevention of Bacterial Contamination and
Disease:

A house or building that is not properly

maintained in terms of proper housekeeping
creates conditions for microorganisms, bacteria
and also pests to multiply rapidly. When this
happens, occupants become susceptible to
various forms of illness and diseases like H-fever,
typhoid fever, malaria and other fatal ailments.
Bacteria breeds in unsanitary, moist and slightly
acidic environment like:

➢ Dirty surroundings
➢ Wet, undisposed and uncovered garbage
➢ Stagnant and dirty water
➢ Crowded places like storerooms that are dirty
➢ Undisposed, uncovered left -over foods
➢ Dirty and unsanitized containers, pans and
utensils

HOTEL ROOM DEFECT AND REPAIR

Defects that could occur in a guest room include:

Missing or broken light bulb
Breakages
Malfunctioning equipment
Carpet stains
Deliberate damage caused by guest
Broken tiles
Broken socket
Housekeeping and Maintenance
Department Coordination with
Maintenance Department

The maintenance department is responsible

for the provision of engineering facilities
that contribute to the comfort of guest and
increase the efficiency of staff.
There are various heads under which
maintenance work is done:
• Electrical work – Air conditioning and
heating, fused bulbs, lights and lamps that
are not functioning, defective plugs and plug
points, short circuits and faulty geysers,
refrigerator and mini bars fall under this
category.
• Boiler work – This is necessary to maintain a
supply of hot water to guestrooms.
• Mechanical work – This entails repair or
replacement of any faulty equipment, such as
vacuum cleaners, ice-cube machine and so on.
• Plumbing work – this deal with faulty faucets,
showers, drainage systems, water closets and so
on.
• Civil work – Any masonry work comes under this
head.
• Carpentry work – Broken or shaky furniture
mirrors, and cupboards in less than speak
condition and fresh woodwork are all part of
this.
To look at it another way, in terms of
frequency, urgency and complexity of the job,
there are three levels of maintenance work:
• Routine Maintenance
• Preventive Maintenance
• Inspection
• Minor Correction
• Initiation of work order
• Schedule Maintenance
